CPC Poll

Original CPC line up all the way!!!

The Plus version of the CPC was late, the only "thing" was it had a nice shiney new palette of colours, but in my opinion, because the Plus version was compatible with nearly all the old CPC games, this didnt help its cause and all people saw was the same setup as a normal CPC... Why bother?

Then we have the cartridges, 26 CPC games on cartridge? Need I say more?

Moving back on to the hardware front... Hardware sprites and all the jazz, just what coders wanted... About 6 years prior, but considering coders had already sussed all this out with programming, pfffttttt, why bother!?!

Seriously, the hardware was completely dated... The Amstrad was in most part, a gaming machine, granted it was ravaged by shitty Spectrum ports, but thats what it was in my opinion... And when done right... It kicked the shit out of all the other micros.

When the Plus line was released, it was all a waste of time, you had the likes of Sega releasing a console with a much better Motorola 16/32-bit chip, and by it's side is the great great Z80 handling mostly sound.

The plus line could never compete, it was a nice machine for what you get, but when compared to the original CPC line... It could've never ever have been better... Because it was a complete failure!

I dunno. The CPCPlus did ok enough to keep the CPC alive for a short while. It was just the lack of decent games on carts that let it, and the GX4000 down.

That and the fact that Amstrad locked away the "Plus" features to Cart-Only.
IIRC it was Codemasters that found a way to switch it on via software.

Why, Amstrad?! Why!!!?!?!

I had a GX4000 and it was a really nice little machine (yeah, the joypads were tiny, but they were useable and far more comfortable than NES pads). I had about 10 games for it, including Pang! and Robo-FuckFuckFuck!FUUUUCK!!!!-Cop and it really showed what the CPC+ range could do.

It was definitely way too late for the Plus machines when they finally came, but for all the extras they added, you've got to admit that they were damned fine 8bit machines.

Releasing 8bit machines when the world had readily accepted 16bit was more than a tad naive of Amstrad - I presume they just wanted to mop up with cheap as chips all-in-one machines (they were still cheaper than the ST). They would have been better delaying a year and coming out launching 16bit successors IMHO.

I've got too many games for too many other systems that I haven't played due to lack of time. Tempting though...

I never had an Amstrad computer myself, did I miss out on much?

Nothing you can't play via Emu's.
I still own my original CPC, but more out of love of my original system, than greatness!!

Wish I had. Had to rebuy the stuff I had as a kid; couple of 464s, Atari 2600 and a Megadrive 2 I picked up for a tenner (even tho I really should have got an original MD).

Oh and Dabz's 6128 that still has an unresolved power issue, but I didn't have one of those back in the 80s.
