Socoder -> Off Topic -> This Isn't The Searchbox You’re Looking For

If anyone has any suggestions how I can make the shoutbox input any less like the search box... let me know!!

You guessed right, I was trying to do the search and ended up in the shoutbox. Don't know how to delete it.

How's about moving the right-hand side feed column down level with the shoutbox, and then move the search tool across to above that.

Nice idea, Steve, but if you undock the sidebar, then where would it go?
GfK's idea seems more workable, but would require a per-theme fix. Hmmm..

And, yeah RSK, I could tell. And you aren’t the only one that does it. Seems about once a month some odd cryptic message pops up in the shoutbox!
Definitely needs a fix.

I do like Dave's idea though.

Maybe the simplest solution would be to allow us to delete our own shoutbox posts? Only if they haven't had replies and been turned into a thread, though.

*looks at shoutbox code*

.... yeah, that is SO not the simplest solution

OK then, maybe the "simplest solution" is to write "Shoutbox" in the shoutbox by default, since the search box has "Search" written in it.

|edit| and not to over complicate things, but it'd be nice if the default text deleted itself out when you click on it, like the search box doesn't!

I still like the speech bubble idea.

"Search" button, click that, little pop up window with a text box and button in... And voila... Done!

I've just searched for corned beef porn...

There is none!

Aaah, now what you've done there, is you've fixed the wrong thing.
The problem isn't the search box.
The search box is already there, but the Shoutbox box is a more immediate box, so that's the one people tend to click on first.

Ah, I see what you mean!

How about making the shoutbox smaller, and then putting it's text box at the bottom... Like an IRC setup?

And have a "Shout" button next to it?

I might tweak your suggestion, and make the Shoutbox input box be a "Click to reveal the input box" button.
That might work..?

Yeah, like the spoiler buttons from some forums, but where the writers are the one's, providing them.

Maybe add a timed auto hide/collapse back ?

Have a text hint in the text box saying "Shout here!".

<input type="text" name="shout" placeholder="Shout here!">

A possible solution would be to disable adding text to the shoutbox on press of "Enter" key. A button on the side can be added which the user needs to click to enter text into shoutbox.
Writing a text and pressing enter to search is so ingrained in our mind that it is difficult to avoid this error when two text boxes are nearby.

Maybe just make the shoutbox box double height?
