VR Accident....


So, what happened was, I was browsing the web with a coffee about 10 minutes ago... And I needed the loo... So off I went, had a wee and came back into the room... Well, there was a tiny bit of fluff on the floor, and, well, I tripped on it!

Doing cart wheels across the room, I banged into my computer desk and dropped to the floor, my coffee came off, the cup hit me on the head, and knocked me out for a couple of minutes... Regaining consciousness, I started to get up, obviously pretty sluggish by this time, and without realising, I was pressing keys on the keyboard as I was fumbling for a hold on the desk to help heave me up, you'd think it would've been a load of gibberish as I was hitting the keys while trying to get a grip to get up...

Nah, not me, I gets up, parks my arse on my chair, bit of a breather and I just glance at the screen... And though and behold... I've only gone and bloody bought an oculus rift by accident, I mean, I've managed to somehow, in my period of blind confusion managed to put my card details in EXACTLY, as well as my personal details too... On top of a delivery slot of before 12pm which is handy really because I'm out on the afternoon!!! AMAZING

I mean... What are the chances of that! Eh?

A 3rd sensor really helps with 360 rotation, 2 at front and one behind = nearly 100% visibility of the controllers at all times.

But try 2 first it may be okay for you, but when I'm playing Robo Recall the 3rd really helps - could just be my setup.

I have the best of both VR worlds now (See what I did there... eh eh eh, see it)

PS4 and PC, and obviously, I'll be inline for a tinker with the Oculus SDK too... Not that I'll do much like, lol, but, I do like a play with out like that!

Go get the Oculus Tray tool, helps to access some nice features easily.

Have you tried Robo Recall yet?

Also go try RecRoom, a simple multi player game with lots of rooms/games and it's free.

Not yet no... Just tried Lucky Tales, nice game that, right up my street really, it reminds me of that little platformer in the PSVR Playroom thingy.

Seems to be running nice and smooth, I had to pop to Maplin for a DisplayPort->HDMI adaptor though, I knew my 1070 card had 4 ports, but I didnt realise they weren't all HDMI, 3xDisplayPort and 1xHDMI... You'd bloody think they'd have two HDMI on there... Never mind, sorted it though.

The sensors are fine, picked everything up first go, I turned Guardian off as my play area isnt huge, and just having two caused no problems either.

I think the PSVR and Oculus are a bit of six and two threes ingame for me, but, I will admit, the PSVR headset is a lot better build wise, nice and sturdy, easy put on/off... I dont really care much for the velcro setup on the Oculus, I mean, it's a minor complaint, but if I had one, that would be it, but it does win back points for cabling, the PSVR one, you seem to get lost in cables for it, from the setup, to the headset, the Oculus on the other hand, with it's onboard headphones... It's a lot tidier!

Oh, and the controllers... They are good on the rift, much better then them stupid magic wand thingys PSVR uses, and they are pretty shit hot at being tracked too, I like them, very natural, and they get projected into the VR world better then the PSVR controller does in it's domain.

All in all, for £399 quid, it's a good system, I can see me using it a lot!

Would I recommended this over the PSVR setup, yes, yes I would, but, for me, PSVR is just as good, there is plus's and minus's for both, gaming wise though, I think they float about the same (From what I can see), what wins it for me are the Oculus controllers and the cabling!

I wasnt going to look at Unity, but, erm, I have, and for some reason, I see the sense in its setup... Thats a new'un because the lasttime I looked I was like "Eh?" !

No idea on Quill.... never heard of it TBH (other than the 8-bit adventure-writing thing).

But Unity is pretty damn good, though I'm still on 5.6 cos I have a pro licence for that - guessing you're on 2017.2? No idea what you could do with it VR-wise... it isn't a platform I've given a lot of thought to.

I tried some of the samples first, which were okay, theres a space thing, shooty thing and something else, cannot remember... Anyway, I then created a new project, made a few ickle boxes, then had them rotating just in front of my boat race, and I could have a nosey around them... Thing is though, you cannot "emulate" the headset in the editor, when you hit play, you've literally got to whack the headset on, so I'm guessing the easiest way would be to make a 3D game, then roll your own "headset/touch" emulation within your game, then when your done, you bolt on the VR guff at the end!

I'm not sure, but that would be the sensible way, sod whipping that on/off my head every fives minutes!

Hm... I don't really get that. But then, I don't really get VR at all.

I think if you're doing VR development then in most circumstances, most of the work is always going to be game logic which you can do without the headset anyway. Yeah it'd be a right faff putting that on and off all the time - even flicking back and forth between Visual Studio and Unity got to be such a pain in the arse that I bought two new monitors so I could have both side by side.

its whicked with gear, surprised it hasnt buckled!

Quill is fun like, it's an odd'un, I've seen it before and never thought much, but when your in there having a good auld scrawl, it's great... I also had a look at Oculus dream deck, that's a nice little thing... Basically just a handful of scenerios played out... Having a T-Rex waltz around a corner, then coming up to you for a sniff and a growl... Well, aye, it gets your pumper pumping, and I dont mean the one in your chest either!

Its an interactive simulation, not finished and still in early access, but that was a cool little thing too, right there in the capsule with my arse on top of a rocket, looking out the little windows, pushing the buttons and all that... I liked that as well!

It's just the immersion factor that gets it for me, your in there... I mean, you know your not really there, but, it tricks your mind into stirring up all the emotions of say, having a huge fucking dinosaur plod towards you, all teeth and slaver!

And I like that!

Lucky Tales too, it reminds me of a Crash Bandicoot, but, with a more open game world (Still linear), but when your in the headset, it's different, its more fun, I was standing up having a look above ledges for things, see if there was anything there, peering over the side of ledges to see if there was any secrets... It is a bog standard 3D platformer at heart, but being VR rises it up.

Yeah I hate the Velcro on the Rift too, but once it's set it's okay and you can just put it on like a hat.

Try oculus medium, that seems pretty cool to create 3d objects.

I recommend setting up the guardian, I would have crashed into the walls a lot more than I have.

I havent got the room for full on jumping about, so when guardian is switched on, the grid pops up every 10 seconds, so I just got rid of it... I'm not really going to bang anything in my little play area whatsits face... So, it's off... But, I can see how handy it would be mind, nice feature that!

One thing I did notice about the rift mind, when in environments that are dark, and you have a bright light source in the scene, the len's in the headset dont half make god rays... I cannot remember seeing that in the PSVR headset, but yeah, definitely noticeable in the rift!

Blame the Fresnel lens which are used in the Rift for the god rays. I'm use to them now, but still wish they weren't there... You only really notice them on black backgrounds...

With the guardian disabled, don't say I didn't warn you

Strange time to scale back since the new MS mixed reality HMD due out very soon (Samsung, Acer, Fujitsu, Dell, HP, Lenovo). These devices are cheaper, easier to use and requires less beefy hardware to run so it should increase the market size of VR.

Sony and Oculus are creating/producing more VR games for their systems.
