Socoder -> Off Topic -> Lineage and Honor

Lineage and honor.
Important things.

When you wear a school uniform, your actions are judged on that uniform, and everything you do reflect on the school.
When you fight for the king or queen, your actions should be those fit for the country.
When you buy a domain name based on that of a vitally important name in the history of YOUR COMMUNITY, then the people who visit it deserve the joys and wonders of the websites that came before it.

It's up to you to ensure your community is appreciative of your domain name, and that the results are able to stand up alongside the history and lineage of the world that you've chosen to brand yourself with.

Do not take a domain name lightly.
It is the most important thing on your site.

Eh?

|edit| WTF? That wasn't there before.

Erm... is this to do with that blitzcoder thing?

I reregistered at SyntaxBomb, but decided against posting there. This isn’t their battle. We learned, last time SB was around, that it's not good to do that kind of thing.
So I posted it here, instead.

So what's the story? Who's behind it all?

The story is I said the guy was a moron in a previous newsletter, for having bought a domain name and then practically wasting it away, and he took it as an insult that I called him a moron.

He's taken the complaint to SyntaxBomb instead of bringing it to me.

Incidentally...
Steve_Elliot I was actually banned from socoder when somebody told me to fuck off! Yes, it's very clicky there, and even though I was being attacked about something I was working on, and I responded with sarcasm - I was the one banned!!

... I have absolutely no recollection of actually banning Steve Elliot.
I remember having words with both parties, but .. Banned?! Nah. I wouldn't have done that. I banned one guy for being a total puttz, and another guy for (ironically) plotting against SyntaxBomb, but I've very very rarely used the ban function, to the point where this new script doesn't even have one. ... yet.

LOL.. Oops

Yes, it's very clicky there

I suspect he meant "cliquey"... unless he meant there's a lot of mouse-clicking needed to get around?

Oh dear, well, as a member who visits both sites, and enjoys using them both, I think I'll grab the popcorn!

LOL. Enjoy, Dabz.

FWIW : I have no issues with "Other sites", and I've heartily recommended on previous occasions that more is better for when unexpected closures occur.
But don't waste the opportunity.
Use your domain name wisely, and create something to be proud of, not just "It looks like every other flat-file forum on the internet"
The BlitzCoder name does not deserve that.

If you know what BlitzCoder was, then you oughta understand what BlitzCoder should be.

Not to poke the beehive, but blitzcoder.com seems to be the world's shittiest hosting page now? :/

Yes, I've whinged about that on several occasions.
It's horrendous.
I've spent the past few years watching it, before finally deciding "Well, I might as well grab the .net, since Socoder.net seems to be the most used", but it's a shame that the .com is such a fucking wasteland.

Meh... it's always the same when a site goes tits-up (i.e. bb.com). Bandwagon-jumper-onners falling over themselves to set up a new forum and expecting everyone else just to flock to it. Never works. You just end up with situations like this where somebody's bought a domain name he's got no clue what to do with.

I don't bother with any of them. Oh... I think I reregistered at syntaxbomb though, because that's one's got history*. And I didn't want any of you cunts stealing my name.

|edit| * history with the same owner, that is.

SB was a useful site, but got screwed over and ended up closing. (IIRC it was something to do with uploads?! Can't remember exactly.)

I hope it doesn't happen again.
I'm sure they've learned from the past, and will try to keep things going, this time.

Yeah I seem to think it was somebody using it to host warez or porn or something. I mean... surely you'd just ban the user so maybe there was more to it than that.

But these sites have existed mainly because of BRL products, and if the products keep disappearing, it's only logical that the sites will go the same way.

I'm here for the atmos, I suppose. I don't use BRL stuff any more and let's face it, this is hardly a hub of Unity fanboyism!

I'm going to miss BRL stuff, but I'm fairly sure my C++ Framework should be workable enough to replace anything I used Blitz'y stuff for.
A shame.
Especially since it's not exactly easy to copy+paste a short bit of code from this, into the codebox.. :\

Well, I headed on over to the BlitzCoder site and grumbled and whinged and tried to explain all about the functionality of what BlitzCoder was. Oh, boy, did I rant.

The owner wasn’t having any of it, and claimed he was merely replicating BlitzBasic's site.

I’m ok with that, but I honestly think he's bought the wrong domain name for that.
This is going to, I’d imagine, come up time and time again. People will stumble across the site, filled with memories past, but it won’t be the same.

It’ll be like BlitzBasic.com was, and there’s a distinct set of users who frequented BlitzCoder simply BECAUSE it wasn’t BlitzBasic.
It’s like a shop stocking Pepsi in a CocaCola fridge. You see the sign, but when you reach it, something's not quite right.

I’ve said what I had to say, and I’ve tried to push him in a direction that would satisfy members of BlitzCoder, but he's dead against "BlitzCoder" even though that's the domain he chose to use.

You know what, it's 15 years later, and i guess its time for the new kids to take over.
Let them build, and let them create.
Maybe something great can come from it.

It won’t be our BlitzCoder.

It’s a shame that our story is over.

End Of
