Had loads of folk ring in about massive bills when I worked at British Gas. Nothing that big, mind!

When people had new meters put in, if the meter was brand new, never installed before, the reading was set to "99999". A bug in the billing system thought that 99999 plus one unit, was 10000. Obviously it's not - the meter has just rolled over to 00000. Every time this happened, customers got an immediate bill for 10,000 units of electricity. 10,000 units back then would be maybe £1200.

I took so much shit from folk over the phone cos of this.
