GPD Win

"Hello I'm Cortana!"
The little laptop thing sprung to life, and Cortana seemed lovely and cheerful.
Guiding me through the Windows 10 Setup, she also listened to me, so when it said "Do you want me to use your location data?" and I shouted "Fuck no!", she actually switched that off for me, so I didn't even have to click it!

After a few more taps on the screen, and a tappy-tap away on the keyboard for my username and password, the device was ready!!!

... .. to do Windows 10 updates!! \o/

A few days ago, me and Dave (Parker, College Dave) were chatting about how I never play many PC games, anymore.
Sure, I have my laptop, but it's really not comfortable for playing games on. It's either too bulky to sit on your knee whilst playing with a gamepad, or it's no good 'cos there's no mouse.

Honestly, since making the switch to Laptop from Desktop, my PC gaming time has plummeted.
All but AGameAWeek!!

It was then that I remembered that GPD do a tiny, micro, handheld PC, and I figured, what the heck, I might as well try it.

It's currently up to 46%, and I've been watching GfK's tales of woe, so am fully expecting to be able to use it by some time next year! (With the disclaimer that it's next year in a few days time..)

More as it happens!

I was very tempted back when they first came out. Still am. Version 2 is due out soon.

Yeah, I've decided (based on Apple purchasing) that I'm not going to wait for "Better, Soon" anymore.
Plus, probably won't have the ability "later". Home insurance needs paying. Grrr!!

Still waiting for the updates to finish.
It got to 100%, then dropped back to 0%.

It's now up to 14% .. ... For the third time...

I thought mine was doing that at first but when I looked closely, next to the percentage, the first pass says "downloading", the second "verifying" and the third pass "installing".

|edit| Probably worth mentioning that on mine, a shit-ton of updates were required and this whole process was repeated numerous times over the course of the next 28 hours and 35 minutes (including leaving it on all night to do it's thing).

...nope. Just updating, here!!

Oh THAT update screen. Most of my time was spent in the Windows Upgrade Assistant, and that does tell you what it's actually fannying on with. I could have used my lappy while it was doing it but I'm not one for rocking the boat with this shit, having had so many issues with it in the past.

98%!
The update is nearly ready to update!
Joy!!!

plugging the USBC charge cable into the laptop only gives it a low-power charge. "Please charge using your charger."

Plugging it into the Megadrive USB Hub (which isn’t a "powered" hub, btw) which is hooked up to the Mac Mini, produces a full-power charge..
Huh...

Wonder if that's because of your dodgy image rotatey uploady thing?

Most definitely!

It's likely that the screen was a portrait design (for an Android tablet) and repurposed.

Yeah, the GPD xd Android one does the same, every so often.
As the updates continue, it’s flipped back to normal, now.

Open the Disk Cleanup tool, and click "Clean Up System Files"
Give it a few minutes, then look at how much space on your drive is taken up by "Previous Windows Installation”

20Gb..
TWENTY Gigs..
On the 64Gb of internal storage.

FFS, Windows!!!

Using my recent Benchmark thing from a few weeks ago.
It's certainly not a powerhouse, is it!!
To be expected, but .. eek!!

Aw, nuts.. It shut down...

All that updating completely drained the battery, even though it was plugged in the entire time!!

Doesn't say a lot for the battery life.. Hmm..
Anyhoo, in the half-hour or so that I got to play with it, it played FR-025 fantastically in its 1280x720 resolution, but struggled with Audiosurf, to the point that I had to drop the game to 640x480 in order to keep it smooth and playable.
That's a bit of a shame, but .. Audiosurf in handheld!? Yeeeaaah!!!

Form Factor

Pics
> Reveal 🔎

Closed, more or less identical to a New 3DS XL
.. The SNES-alike is a New 3DS XL, the Red one's a GPD xd Android thing from about a year or so ago, and the Black one's my new GPD Win.

Opened, slightly larger, due to the chunkier hinge, but the screen size is about the same.

Backside

> Reveal 🔎
Round the back are a couple of ports.
Leftmost, the USB-C is (I think) just for charging, but I've nothing else I can plug in there to find out!
There's then a little rubber thing. I'm not sure if there's anything under that. Kindaa don't want to break it to find out! Might have to check online.
Then there's a MicroSD slot. Currently unused, although I might splash out and buy a big one at some point.
Next is Standard USB, which I assume can be used for an external harddrive, or some sort out TV output dongles and things. (No HDMI port, it seems. Although, maybe that's what that little rubber thing's hiding?!)
And last is a headphone port. Insert your own Apple whinge, here.

There are two shoulder buttons on both sides.
The inner ones work as expected, but the outer ones need to be pressed inwards, so are a little more awkward than those on both the 3DS and also the GPD xd.

Need Input

> Reveal 🔎
Teensy tiny little buttons!!
They take slightly more push than I'd like.
They're not exactly "bad", but when you've slightly long fingernails like I have, you end up accidentally clicking adjacent keys with your nails!
It'll take some getting used to, I imagine.

> Reveal 🔎
There's a little toggle at the top to switch the gamepad to three different devices.
The middle is Mouse-Mode, whereby the right thumbstick (for some reason!) moves the mouse, the left thumbstick acts as the scrollwheel and the shoulder triggers act as left and right mouse buttons.
Personally I'd've put the mouse control on the left, and had the face-buttons act as mouse buttons. But I guess not!

The other two modes are Direct-Input for the Joystick, and .... .X Input.
I'm not sure what the hell the difference is, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Screen

> Reveal 🔎

A nice and high-enough resolution 1280x720 pixel screen.
Not exactly iOS Retina (been spoiled by that) so I can definitely see pixels, but they're not as bad as the 3DS's screen.

Today I'll be trying out various games and emus and whatnot, to see what does and doesn't work well on the thing, and I'm sure I'll be posting all about it, later

Oh yeah, and one other thing..

The box that the GPD Win came in is GORGEOUS..
That nice "silky cardboard" however they do that. Everything was enclosed in it's own little black box, with little golden labels for Plug, USB cable and Headphones.
Not only that, but the box includes a Win10 key. This is my third device with Win10 on it, and yet this is the ONLY Win10 key that I've actually seen.

So, plus points for that!

EPIC!!

Seems to fuck up in fullscreen mode, though. I think that might be due to Windows rotating the screen, whilst poor 1999 Unreal Tournament doesn’t have a fucking clue what's going on!!

HalfLife 2 runs nice, but even with the fan on full strength, you can feel it starting to get a bit warm!

Similar to Half Life 2, Portal 2 runs nice and smooth, if a little warm.

Meanwhile, Ori was recommended to me as a good platformer, so I gave that a go, and it ran at about 5fps!!
Aw well.. :/

Too slow, Parappa!!!
PS2 emulator, trying to run, but not doing a very good job.
Seems that PS1/N64 era is the limit for emu's.

In which case, if you're just grabbing something for emulation purposes, you're probably better off grabbing the half-the-price GPD xd Android device, which has only about half the power, but isn't bogged down with Windows, so seems to run the same number of emus successfully.

On the other hand, "Home Computer" emulators are much better on this, on account of it has a keyboard!!!

Does the scripted amiga emulator run on it? I notice that even the 7700hq does not have it easy with the a1200 demo's

There are also some nice html5 benchmarks online.
