Fantasy Consoles

A time ago I bought a Humble Bundle pack and there was a game dev tool in it called Pico 8. I was looking on steam today and noticed a programming tool similar to it(Basic8) I learned the description for tools like that. "Fantasy Consoles"

It looks like there are more of those tools around. I have only tried to run pico-8 programs and did no development in it. It seems like those tools are getting more interesting as a development tool.

Is anyone using something like this? Will it be something that can turn into something that can replace your current development tool?

I really like the look of Pico-8, looks great fun! Not sure if it can actually be used for something in "real" life though apart from learning and experience.

Thing is, from what I have been noticing these fantasy consoles are getting more capable and more have been ariving on the market. Not at all Unity level capable though.

With some the games made with it can run on lots of devices. Also useable for Jams etc. I am not tempted at this time to learn and use one at this time but they might get a lot better in a few years.

I kind of get that feeling looking at them as when I first discovered Amos on the Amiga Computer So many more developers making good things these times.

This one is a new on the steam store :

I've been following 2DArray on Twitter which shows some code and their demos using Pico8, they do some very cool stuff:

And I totally agree they do have that feel of Amos!

A guy on the RetroRemakes forums did some very good things with Pico8 in a couple of mini-comps there. It's certainly interesting.

PixelVision8 is another fantasy console that seems to have a good amount of followers.

Hopefully the limitations that they impose on peoples code might bring a couple along to retro console coding maybe

Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also!

I'm very interested in building a pico-8 console, so much so that I bought a raspberry pi zero and a 128x128 lcd... silly me.
