Workshop Reworks - July 2023

The other week I revisited my first 4 Wednesday Workshop titles, and I figured that might be a fun challenge for the creativity thread for July, so that's what I'm asking for, during this month.

Head back into the archive (it's a big archive!) and have a good nosey through.
Pick out something that shines for you.
It might be a great game that you want to revisit.
Or it could be utter garbage that you think could be made better.

Then remake it, and rework it, and build a better game from it.

It needn't be one of your own, but if you are reworking someone else's workshop entry, be sure to give them proper credit.

That's your creativity challenge for July, should you choose to accept it.

Let's rework!

The complete Wednesday Workshop archive is here.

I think my challenge for the month is going to be just to finish something off

Although I may attempt to demake something to NES or Gameboy if I get a chance, actually have a couple of sundays free so we shall see

|edit| Gridshot looks like a contender but I'll remake it from just the thumbnail to give it my own spin...probably for the gameboy I reckon. |edit|

|edit| I forgot how much I love prototyping stuff |edit|

So, the way I see it, you have tings moving in the grid which mustn't hit your ship and you must also not hit your ship.

Pressing B toggles the mode between moving the tagetting reticule and moving the ship, Pressing A fires a laser from each point so you must avoid hitting your ship whilst hitting enemies

I guess you'd need some incentive to move your ship so maybe some collectables would be good

Bit of refinement to the screens

Added the essentials to the home screen and inverted the logo, with some "colour" changes to indicate depth.

Recycling old They Are Everywhere assets a bit here, I figured the enemies should be clearly different to the player and pick up sprites for easier identification.

Hey! So Jayenkai reached out to me (I have the same username for everything, as I'm forgetful), so I have a Twitter account for things.

Cyangames - thanks so much for turning my daft little game into something more substantial. Already from the screenshots I'm suitably impressed.

I seem to remember the challenge on the old Blitzcoder forums. I thought it was the old "Don't use sprites" (it wasn't, but I'm rubbish with graphics), but it was an idea going around in my head. I'd been playing a lot of Jeff Minter's stuff at the time (still kinda do) so wanted it to be a tribute to him. I think the game was about a week's work (probably even that), but that was the Workshops on BC at the time was it to be quick.

I've always struggled with graphics, as I have absolutely no artistic talent (it's served me well in my 15 year web development career), so to see the game look as it does has made me incredibly happy. Also on the Game Boy! It's one of the retro consoles I have a lot of nostalgia for, so to see somebody inspired by something I did in 2005 as an angsty 20 year old to create something fills my heart with joy.

So thanks, Cyan, you've made my day and it's not even 9am here - when you're done I'd love to play it

Awww, that's awesome Thanks so much for commenting, I recently had to self boot away from twitter and err, most of the internet due to some rather unsavoury stuff so it means a lot to me to hear from the creator of the original game I'll do my best to port it across

Thanks for making it and thanks to Jay for reaching out

I'll post updates on this thread

A fellow web developer then, with a similar career length to my own, hahaha, what a crazy world!

Gonna try to do this all on this lil linux lappy, got most of my development environment set-up.

Glad there's still a lot of 32bit apps out there!

It begins!

Such chaos! So many windows!! I've gotten so used to JSE lately, that I forget how things "used" to be with windows galore!
Occasionally I do a Shoebox/Browsercade game, and it all comes flooding back, though.
I'm glad I'm not doing live-web-dev as much, any more. Good grief that was insane.

Aye, live web dev has kinda been my career, no staging server, nadda. It gets intense but there's always workarounds to prevent disruptiosn to live services. y'know, like long established e-commerce sites on very bespoke platforms..heh hehhehehhh

I have a clear day on Sunday for coding again, will see what can be done then, and.... maybe tonight after I've got the house cleaned up again. We'll see. My evenings tend to be consumed with time on the phone, cooking and cleaning quite a lot of late.

JSE will probably really struggle with this one, depending on your system specs.

Ended up sorting out my "End Level" routine for November game instead on Sunday. Need to figure out how best to add levels next. Gosh golly ASM is still a little weird to work with.
