I hope so. But we were told we'd see the Switch Pro around CES back in 2020!!!

I don't see any point in a Switch 2, just making the same again but slightly better is no different from the competition, I bet it will flop.

Agreed.
People flipped over that rumoured IR sensor on the side of the joy con, getting their hopes up that you could use it as a mouse! WOW!!!

.. All I could think of was, Nintendo would NEVER try to make a console where you had to sit at a desk and play FPSs with a faux keyboard and mouse.
I REALLY hope Nintendo don't just do a "but with more power".
Have they ever done that?

Gimmick the shit out of it, Ninty..
Gimmick it to hell and back.

I wouldn’t mind just a switch with more power to keep the frame rate up in Zelda!

My bet, its just a DS -> DSi, Wii -> WiiU etc. same thing with a tiny upgrade so they have a reason to test out a new anti piracy method.

That Mouse functionality is apparently a thing, then.. .. That feels really un-Nintendo like to me.
I hope it's something other than what it appears.

There has only been one use for a mouse from Nintendo in recent years (excluding mario paint)

A mouse feature, while not excitingly new, would be useful for fps and strategy. I much prefer using the mouse on no man's sky on the pc, than I do with the joysticks on the switch. I mean I manage but would have been cool to have a mouse option.

Hard to know where they can go with switch 2 that is too radically different since they ditched the DS and made rlthe original switch both the TV console and the portable console in one? It kinda looks like the change from the DS to DSi XL than the Wii to the Wii U.

Was there something you were hoping to see?

You're playing No Man's Sky in Handheld mode, and decide to disconnect the right hand joycon to be a mouse.

OK, Now What?>

Disclaimer : I'm not being "Mr Jay doesn't use a mouse any more because he sits with a laptop all the time and only ever uses a trackpad so doesn't have any experience with a mouse and no longer understands how good they are."

I'm totally "Mouse = FPS"
I've barely played any FPS's over the past decade of laptop/trackpad only, and .. DAMN, I've missed mouse-based gaming.

BUT..

That Wiimote Pointer was SO good. And it didn't feel like "sat at a desk playing with a mouse"
I kinda felt like the IR sensor on the right joy con was going to be for that purpose, so you could flip it around and suddenly it's a Wiimote.
Really disappointed that that didn't happen, and would be even more so if we just end up going down the "best when sat at a desk" Mouse route.

.. Also, it's not very comfortable holding a JoyCon like that. Or is that just me?

Guess we'll find out. Having played a lot of my old Wii games over Christmas, I wouldn't mind a wiimote experience from the switch but that would be on TV thing. Hard to imagine how you could use that in handheld mode, certainly not pointing at the screen.

If I was using a joy pad as a mouse, I'd probably have the switch on my knee or coffee table with that huge stand. Not the weedy thing you got of the current switch.

Hats off to you being able to use a track pad. Takes me twice as long to get anything done with one, and I end up with hand and wrist cramp. Happy to carry a small wireless mouse and also love using a pen for the last 10+ years on my tablets and laptops.

I wouldn't mind Street pass and stuff like that bought back. Haha.

Speaking of pens.. I wonder if it might've been better to put the sensor on the pointy-tip corner of the joycon, so you could use it more like a pen?

*grabs Joycon*

Yeah..
If I grab the joycon and try it on its side like the S2 seems to be, that... I can feel that hitting my wrist/RSI really quickly, but if I tip it to be like a stupidly-chunky pen, it actually feels REALLY good in the hand.
I can easily click the shoulder button, and (if I bother to trim my nails) the Y button is also quite easy to tap in this position, too.

Now that's a good idea. I also found it was comfortable holding at an angle on the edge, if you know what I mean. And finger on the shoulder button. The new joycons are larger which might change things.

I hope they haven't done something stupid where the cartridge slot is only for old switch games, and new switch 2 games are download only. Something insane like that would make me think twice about getting one.

Thoughts as they happened... (Apologies for "watching one screen, typing elsewhere" typos)

New Direct theme! Woot!

Mario Kart

and that big long endless road returns.
Those worlds look HUGE!!
Gliding!
Hats!
"World" !! oooooooohhh!!
Weather, time of day, open world. Ooooooooh!!!!
Knockout with checkpoints. OOoooooh!!!
Free roam!! YEAH!!!!!
Photo Mode!! WOOOHOO!!!!

Oh, I'm excited, here! Day 1 launch. Day 1 purchase! Yeah, yeah, yeah!!

C-Button - GameChat

"Chat", with AI noise cancelling and all of the usual stuffs.
You can share screens, too, though... Good grief, look at that framerate
There's a camera, too, but you need to be on the Switch Online subscription to use it, and there's extra options in the Parental Control app.
.. Not for me, though, ta..

GameShare

Lets you play one copy of a (specifically selected) game against 2 players on 2 switches.
That's nice.

System

1080p screen, up to 120fps.
Vivid LCD with HDR
Magnetic Joycons
Bigger SL/SR buttons when playing a horizontal joycon.
Slightly larger thumbsticks.
Mouse Controls
Built in speakers have equalisers. (I think)
Built in mic with noise cancelling.
3D Audio "in supported games, after a system update"
Big Stand
2 USB-C ports Handy for the camera, or a charger.
256Gb of storage. (from 32Gb on the original)
Dock enables 4K resolution, and HDR.
Dock has a fan!!
Switch and Switch 2 games will run, but with obvious complications like the lack of IR sensor, etc.

Switch 2 Welcome Tour

Learn the secrets of the Switch 2 by running around a gigantic Switch, and playing little minigames and the like.
Seems fun.
... You have to pay for it!?
Seems a bit cheeky.

New Cards

New Switch 2 game cards are the same but red, and are faster.
Regular MicroSD cards "likely won't" work, and you're better off buying the new faster "express" ones.
It might even be a "will not work" situation, but I guess that depends on the exact card you have.

New Pro Controller

Has 2 extra buttons at the back, and a headphone jack.

Launch Date

June 5th.. Aw, man, that's decades away!!!!

Three Game Types

Switch, Switch 2, and Switch 2 "Edition" where they've improved visuals, etc, on Switch 1 games.
eg, they can add Mic, Camera, Mouse and enhanced Rumble.
They showed off Mario Party Jamboree, with the "upgrade pack", but.. honestly.. Nah, not for me!!

Zelda, BOTW and TOTK

Both get nice Switch 2 Editions.
The mobile app now has GPS and QR Codes and other oddball features that look a bit frickin' bizarre, if I'm honest!

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Improved visuals and an extra story mode.

Metroid Prime 4

Mouse controls, and 4K 60fps, or even smoother 120fps in performance mode.

Pokemon Legends A-Z

Won't run like arse.

Upgrade Packs

Will be available.. ... And that's all the info you're getting.

Mouse

If there's not a 2 player Lemmings game... What's the point?
They're showing off the mouse as if it's just a Wiimote, but you're stuck to the ground. Honestly, this mouse mode really isn't hooking me in.

.. Not feeling it.

Games from Third Parties

Elden Ring : Meh
Hades II : Meh
Street Fighter 6 Includes a new "wiggle for no reason" control scheme. Wow! Also, Amiibo cards? Interesting.
Daemon X Machina : Meh
Split Fiction : Looks interesting.
EA Sports : It's in the game. Sod off, though.
Hogwarts Legacy : With enhanced graphics. Should this not be one of those "Editions" games?
Tony Hawks 3+$ : \o/Yeay\o/
Hitman : I've never got into these.
Project 007 : I thought Bond was dead? How're they gonna do this?!
Bravely Default : OMG, Mouse Minigames!!! (ugh.. That's going to get SO old)
Yakuza 0 Director's Cut : Another franchise that I've never got into. They're supposed to be very Shenmue, right? I enjoyed that.

Hyrule Warriors : Age of Imprisionment

Same as the BOTW companion, but you play in Zelda's storyline where she's stuck in the past. Looks fun.

Switch Online

Switch 2 now has Gamecube games
Includes Zelda Wind Waker, SOUUUUUL CALLLLIBUUUUR II, F-Zero GX : With higher resolution and clearer visuals.
More will be added : Big list, didn't catch them all, but Mario Sunshine was in there, as was Luigi's Mansion.
And the Wireless Gamecube Controller.

Partner Showcase

Deltarune : Chapters 1,2,3 and 4. \o/yeay\o/
Borderlands 4 : The developer IS VERY EXCITED!
Civ VII : "Mouse controls" "Mouse controls" "Mouse controls"
WW2K + NBA2K : Meh
Survival Kids : 4 kids stuck on an island. This kinda looks interesting.
Enter the Gungeon 2 : I dunno what was going on there. Looked intersting, though.
StarSeeker : Why does this remind me of No Man's Sky?
Cyberpunk 2077 : Ultimate Edition : I also haven't played this game, yet. Maybe I should?
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade? Did I get that name right? Good grief, how many FFVII's are there?
Hollow Knight, Story of Seasons, Goodnight something, Two point Museum, I'm missing bits, Wild Hearts, Witchbrook, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, it's going too fast, Star Wars Outlaws
Fast Fusion, oh my god it keeps going, Pacman Shadow Labyrinth, Reanimal, Fortnite, Ridge Racer, Professor Layton, Tamagotchi, Human Fall Flat 2?
My god, that's a library and a half..

The Duskbloods

...!?! Not sure what to think of that one, if I'm honest.

Kirby Air Riders

Sakurai's next game. He's been a busy bunny!

Donkey Kong Bananza

Kong in an open world? Could be interesting.
Kong SMASH!! RAWR!
Looks more than a little chaotic, and perhaps a wee bit crazy!!!

And, that's it.
That was a whirlwind, if I'm honest.

Switch 2, or Switch 2 + Mario Kart in a bundle
No prices, though?!
... ...!?!

Pre-order invites will apparently be sent out via email, as long as your nintendo account is connected to your email, and you've got an online subscription, and you've played a lot lately.

Good grief!!
But .. Yeah, I guess that stops the scalpers.
.. Maybe.

You need to be a regular online player for 2 continuous years to have chance at pre-order invite.

Device looks great. Price and availability not so much.

May wait a little while for it to settle.
