I Done Won A Thing

Like a poet

So, anyone who pays attention to the crap I post on Google+ probably already knows this, but I recently won first place in my university's President's Writing Awards contest in the poetry category. Which is awesome and slightly unbelievable since I had no expectation of winning, but then I also have notoriously low self esteem and that's just how it goes.

The main problem I have is that now the poem is being read by a bunch more people and that's sort of uncomfortable because it's my thing but no longer in the safe and controlled environment of my head. This means people have interpretations of it, they have their own readings of it, and it's all sort of confusing.

It's all slightly troubling since if anyone asked me what the poem is about or what it meant, I'd be unable to help them. My method of writing poetry is such that it's more like acting as a medium for the poem to transfer through. Some people might be able to pull this off and know exactly what they're writing, but when I've sat down to write a poem, I'm as clear on what it is as anyone else.

So, yeah, I won something, but I feel like I couldn't help anyone if they wanted to know specifically what something in the winning poem was. It's sort of embarrassing to say you wrote something but don't know better than anyone else what it means.

I think that, if the writing is as free form and "unspecific" in its nature as you suggest, that that's probably why it won.
The judges would each have added their own ideas into the poem, and that would've helped the imagery, somewhat.

Fantastic that you won. Well done

President of the University, not President of the United States.
