Vic Nibbler

I'm making (remaking) a game called Nibbler, an interesting early arcade game that I only discovered recently. The remake is on a Vic20 with a 3k RAM expansion.

Video in links of an earlier version this week. I've almost finished it, just some little things left to do.

Didn't get the link, possibly, here it is:

Neat. I notice he doesn't "crash" into walls. Makes it much more of a relaxed puzzler than a standard Snake!

If you're aiming to add anything at all, maybe have one of the pickups flash, so you can earn extra points when grabbed.. (combo if collected continuously?)

That's a good idea. I've been able to optimise the code a little have have 256 bytes left. SO do I make an instructions page / credits, attempt a simple jingle tune, add more levels or the flashy thing? It's sooooo stressful when you get so close to out of memory LOL!

Oh, yes you can stop at T junctions ... but it's not a relaxed puzzler ... you get a short rest time for the whole level and waiting will use that up. Eating food will restore a little bit but as nibbler gets faster in later levels this keeps you on your toes. When the rest time is up, the game timer comes down quickly ... so better find some food fast!

In only 256 bytes!! Yikes!!!
I expect the flashy thing would require a couple more bytes, to remember which is the bonus one, and how much of a combo you've got, so will probably end up being a little bit too tight.
Credits are much more important!

I ended with a credits / instruction screen. Looks nice. Out for testing now, but disappointingly despite some people offering to test no one has given me any feedback. Ah well, perhaps the Vic is a little too niche and this is a relatively simple game.

Never owned a Commodore until the Amiga, I'm afraid.
I was a child of the Sugar-rush!

No worries. With these things the nostalgia of the machine itself helps, the Vic was my first computer where I discovered all that magic

Would this be something you could mention in your newsletter this week? Trying to spread the message for other Vic enthusiasts!

Is this being written in assembly? I couldn't imagine only having a couple of Kb. Makes the Speccy's 48k look huuuugeee!!

It’s assembler / Pascal hybrid called Turbo Rascal. Makes it easier but you still need to know about the computer internals.

Even if it might be only you and me reading it, I’ve always wanted a shout out in the newsletter so this would be superb! As I’ve mentioned before, I look forward to the newsletter every week

Lovely stuff! I may move back to the Commodore PLus 4 for coding a game sometime what with it being my first puter 'n' whatnot.

Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also!

Go for it! I enjoyed the experience and always had the urge to write a proper vic game, for same reason.
