Socoder -> Web Development -> Portal Site

Between Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, and now Live, there are a lot of portal sites! I continue to find them more and more fascinating! What features of a portal site do you guys like most (search, maps, rss, blogs, calendars)? I've been wanting to build one as a little pet project just for fun, I know it will never become anything huge. However, if there are any features you guys like to see in a portal, I'd like to know!

My iGoogle page just has a few rss feeds in it. I tend not to use it for anything else, really. It's just a starting point, and I usually end up here right after it! (For reference, my daily trek then goes... Gmail, Smash Bros (on weekdays), Kotaku, Little Lever forum, Retro Remakes, Bar Italia then random sites around the net for much longer than I should!)

You don't need something like that to be "huge" though. If it's useful enough to 1 person then it'll be useful enough o more. It'll gradually pick up speed. Just give it time.

I like to see not a portal. iGoogle is blasted annoying.

They are fantastic projects to code.
I've had lots of fun making portals in php and mysql.

The most fun I have is making content management systems, made some nice cash out of it too on rentacoder.com (though it can be difficult to win bids at first).

I'd reccommend having a go at making a few custom cms systems for other people that will push you to learn in directions you might not otherwise explore.

My favourite portal features are good search capabilities, and a nicely coded blog that allows you to reply with bb code, smileys, images etc.

"Little Lever Forum? Who's... Oh, it's me.."

Same thoughts as above..

I don't really use portal sites (although I do have an old iGoogle thing). I just use bookmarks/favourites to get around my usual lot of websites.

I'd recommend using a CMS too, but I think that coding your own would be a waste of time.

Personally I'd recommend Joomla if you are using PHP. When theres some functionality you need you can usually find a plugin to do the job. If no suitable plugin exists then you can code it your self and reuse the plugin on whatever site you want.

I dont really bother with site design much either. Generally I just rip and modify a template. Joomla has lots of free ones around, but to me, a rocket theme account is well worth $50.

Anyway, with a decent CMS you should be able to bang out portal sites very fast.

Depends what floats your boat Mike, loads of people use Joomla and Wordpress but what I can say that I have found is that the development of Linux, Apache, Mysql and Php is quickly becoming extremely popular as a development environment.

In September I fell over at work and broke my leg, stuck at home with no pay and immobile I turned my attention to web development and found that there was a lot of demand for PHP programmers, both writing custom systems to do all kinds of things and also for people to tweak plugins for Joomla, Wordpress, SMF etc.

I did a few cheap jobs on Rentacoder and increasingly I found that I had carte blanche to charge more or less what I wanted for web development and people would pay.

It's something that I would definately say is free to learn.
Get xampplite, notepad++ and away you go.

The going rate of pay in the UK for experienced php programmers (contracting) is around £40 per hour and the industry is a lot easier to get into than the games industry (which for me was the holy grail for most of my life).

People will even pay you to install Wordpress/Joomla/whatever on thier website but you surely can't beat learning the language properly and earning a good living from it?

Ironically, I've actually considered doing this, today!
But not a GREAT BIG SUPER PORTAL!
More, a remake of one I used to have..
A simple RSS Feed -> a single short quick page, which I can access on my phone easily, since it doesn't have an RSS reader..
