Socoder -> On Topic -> The iPhing Fing...

There's a fair few of us getting into this, and I'm feeling a slight sway in the site...

I'm not sure I want the site becoming iPhing centric.. Feels. Um... "pro"!! Which is pretty much the antithesis of the site's origins..

Are we just going with the flow?
I dunno... Feels a bit weird!!

Having said that, I'm getting a very Amiga'ish vibe from the thing, and it'd be nice if at least ONE dev site on the net had a nice friendly atmosphere...

Sorry Jay. Perhaps we should go back to Visual Basic now.

*shudder* Never liked VB, horrible "None-Basic" expansion of basic, that shouldn't have been sold as Basic. Have you seen their recent "Small Basic"? That's even worse!!

Anyhoo, this isn't a language thing.. This is a "We will sell you our games, rather than doing it for free" thing.
Currently, Socoder's about writing games for fun, for a target system that 95% of the audience is using.

That's what puts me off. That it becomes less about the coding, and more about the muneeez.

I haven't actually looked in into the £££ with making iGames. How does it work? Do you set the price? Does Apple? how much of that money do you see in the end? etc.

You set the price in $1 increments, and you get 70%.

Wow.. for that kind of profit, I'd consider making iPhone games even though I don't have one!

Remember that a lot of people won't want to buy your 99 cent apps if it's only worth twenty-five. 99 cents is the lowest price possible, if you exclude free.

The great thing though is how easy it is to buy something.
It's no more trouble than tapping "buy", then typing your password. The same thing as downloading an app for free, 'cept you're paying.
Apple was pretty smart there.

Apple was pretty smart there.

If only there were smart enough to provide an SDK for the most widely used OS...

FFS, never flush out your c:/Temp folder without double checking.

I had a decent sized XML(.. nope.. spreadsheet.. EXL?) table with a whole bunch of stats all over it.
Seems that, a few days ago (grr) when I went "FOOK, My Temp folder is over 67Gb!! All those uncompressed videos!! Arrgh!!!", I didn't bother to check everything.
"Oh, it's all temp files, who cares!?"

Note to self : Move important things out of the Temp folder!!

---

Yeah, people have to decide if your $.99 (£.59) app is just a cheap money making throwaway, or something they'll be willing to play/use for a while.

I think that's the most important thing.

You need to say "This IS good", but without actually saying "This IS good!"

I actually back up my temp folder, because of all the useless junk in it that I might want to keep.

I can't even go the 'unofficial' way to code iStuff I wouldn't be able to test anything without jailbreaking myipod, which I can't do because it's already on fw 4.0 and is an 'MC' model so I can't downgrade back to 3.1.x to jailbreak it.

Brilliant! No coding and only official apps. There goes the emulators

Don't worry about it.. Emulators only frustrate, in their incredibly annoying "Oh, FFS, Touch buttons do NOT make a good controller!!" ways.
You've still got your DS. Be happy with that!

Meanwhile, um.. yeah. you could do with the coding bit..

Pft. I think it's nice of Microsoft to try to teach programming to kids while disregarding the 'scare' factor. If you make it too fluffy for 'em, they'll just end up here with some version of BlitzMax instead of at Microsoft in a paid position to write the next Windows in C.

Does anyone know of any iPod/Phone games available on the App store that are similar to Sensitive/On The Edge/Pyramids of Ra? It doesn't look like I'll be able to make one myself

I'm sure you'll get around to it, don't worry
Although, in a rather predictable way, now that I'm finally "getting there", Apple have stuffed up the iPhone4, and everyone's going to run, screaming, and leaving the whole thing behind, leaving me with naff all customers.
.. typical!
