I thought I absolutely had to share this...

My brother left me a message over MSN at 23:24 with an idea for my rpg Solstice. I have not edited anything, I'm guessing he was tired

awesome idea for game.... the one you spent 30 years making that is. a kind of sanity meeter not like insane but like a lonely meeter or somethime, you know you spend to long murdering things in a smelly dungeon you go nuts till you see a doctor, basicaly, could have a few effects, like changing you so you think you are the easter bunny changing all the world to magic lala land and you talk to al the ppl like they are carrots untill you finaly figer out which is the doctor to get you fixed. anywho bed time

This made me laugh so much but I think its not a bad idea, something that could either be a plot piece or a part of the entire game.

Sounds like a game I'd play!

It's been done by several games.

I think the most effective was in Eternal Darkness, which was done very well (one of the most interesting parts of the game). It had a sanity meter which if it got too low would cause you to hallucinate tonnes of random stuff. Like your head falling off, another time it comes up with a "thanks for playing the demo of Eternal Darkness" splash screen (that scared the shit out of my brother) and also that your save games have been corrupted.

The Thing also had something similar where your team mates could get scared, but the only the time I remember it having a real effect is when I left someone on their own next to lots of dead bodies. After leaving the room they started screaming and randomly firing their gun around in panic.

The sanity meter is also patented by Nintendo!

Go for it, it's an excellent game that received universal praise (which it deserved).

I started playing Eternal Darkness in my room, but then I stole my TV to use it as a second monitor, so that stopped.

Stole my TV from its peaceful resting spot to be used as a second monitor, I should say.
