Shapely characters might fit in the world well. Monochrome shapes to suit the environment.
Bob Square, Sally Triangle, Maggie Star, Fred Hexagon...
Or even chrs based on chr()s.. Letters and numbers, with hats and faces!

Depending on how strict Nintendo are, possibly the 3DS. If not, dunno, whatever Unity can output to.

I had a storyline in mind for Joe 2, but Monkey wasn't really up to the task (needed a nice graphical effect).
