Question of the Day : February 1st

How has the retro gaming scene changed over the years?
Wed, 01 Feb 2023, 03:05
Jayenkai
It's gotten more expensive, whilst at the same time, if I dare try to sell any of my retro games, I ain't getting jack shit in return.

Question of the Day : February 2nd

How do you balance the audio and visual elements of a game?
Thu, 02 Feb 2023, 01:49
Jayenkai
Ensuring there's particle based explosions alongside player deaths. I think that was the most important addition to my gamedev toolkit. Otherwise deaf people can't tell when they're dying!
.. especially the way most of my games work!!!

I think it probably helps, though, that most of my gamedev time is spent with a very silent game. Adding audio is always one of the last things I do.

I like to put some essential sound effects in at the half way point and the rest as I go along to the end.

I like the silence up until that point, to focus on the mechanics. Sound later helps to round off the whole sensory experience.

Only wish I could make music, that's the one part I just cannot do.

Question of the Day : February 3rd

What's the longest you've gone without showering?
Fri, 03 Feb 2023, 01:48
Jayenkai
I haven't showered since I blacked out, back in 2012!!
Threw my head back whilst shampooing and woke up on the floor.

I've always showered daily, sometime twice. No matter what.

I haven't had a bath since September 11th 2001 - I had a rotten cold and was taking a really hot bath, listening to the radio. First reports were coming in that a plane had hit one of the towers at the World Trade Centre.

Question of the Day : February 4th

How do you use the visual and audio capabilities of different retro systems to create a sense of atmosphere in a game?
Sat, 04 Feb 2023, 04:40
Jayenkai
By making it look like my childhood remembers!!
But hopefully without too much slowdown

If we're talking "Time travel - remove from the past, change the future" then let's get rid of the Sphinx. I swear that's only there to screw everyone who's trying to figure out WTF it's supposed to be.

Hey, let's make a great big giant cat!

Sure, ok, Oh Great Pharaoh.
How big would you like it? Like a big fat Garfield size?

No, I was thinking bigger than that.

Like, as big as a lion?

No.. Bigger!!!!

If I could time travel back to ancient Egypt I would take a photo of them with a smartphone which would then make them think I'm a god, then I would instruct them to build a giant Garfield.

Ehhh, can't think of one I'd like to see vanish.

Question of the Day : February 6th

How do you use user feedback to improve your games or music compositions?
Mon, 06 Feb 2023, 01:11
Jayenkai
I very very rarely go back and fix a game. I just don't have time to backtrack.
Instead, any and all suggestions get popped into the big bag of brain-goo, and are considered when starting future projects.

Once I deem it to be done then it's done nowadays. But in-progress feedback and ideas are always welcomed.

I went back to Nibbler on the vic 20 and made a minor version 2 update to improve the controls. This was the first game I'd made on the vic in decades and the first in assembler/rascal. Revisiting it I was able to improve how it handled considerably.

That's the only time I've needed to do that.

On a commodore 64 add more brown?

LOL!
I've always stuck to the CPCs palette and vibrant colour scheme. Also, contrasts. I don't know if it's my failing eyesight or just the way my head works, but black screens with bright characters is so much better to me than dark rooms with dark elements and dark shadows and darkness.
Fuck that shit, let me see things!!!
