Most things here seem to be going under, too. Major trucking company went bust, 30,000 jobs gone, 12,000 trucks no longer hauling goods to the stores. Major retailers like Walmart who already were dealing with shortages are now dealing with even more shortages because the trucking company that closed carried a lot fo their goods.

RIP Wilkos

I remember Wilkinsons... was a strange cheap brand kind of store.

One thing that the USA and UK journalists can evidently agree on is that an article on any topic needs to start out with a picture of a woman's boobs.

That said a brief skim of the article, seems the store is gone for good and simply the name was what was sold. New stores will likely have no connection to the old ones, except in name only.

It has been sad seeing many of our iconic brands (products and stores) disappear over the years. If they reappear, the name is simply slapped on the cheapest imitation possible.

For the most part, that's true, but "The Range" that bought the name are kinda already the same sort of shop. Just a slightly higher price point.
I think they'll likely be using the Wilko name to open more budget shops, in locations where the Wilko brand will be missed, and .. honestly, I think that's great, though maybe somewhat flawed.

Wilko was essentially the same sort of shop that Woolworths was over here, before Woolworths died on its arse.
Wilko actually took over a ton of the old Woolworths stores, so there was somewhat of a continuation. .. and then ended up in the same bankrupt scenario.

Now it seems The Range are doing.. .. exactly the same thing..
I mean.. you know.. learn from past mistakes, maybe?!

What I remember of Woolworths it was my local go-to for music CDs... Vague memories of some clothes and sweets... Wilkinson on the other hand, I recall gardening stuff and knock off brands.

Woolco and Woolworths are fondly remembered over here. Like TRG, some of my last memories of Woolworths was music, although it was vinyl and cassettes back then. In rural areas, and even really old smaller towns, Woolworths was often all you had for such things.

Wilko was pretty handy for bits and bobs where I live, wandering what it'll be replaced with as, the only backup non-supermarket store to it in town is...errr... poundland, which isn't the best.

Old stores do not seem to make great websites. And I think I have not been into my town for 4 years or so. Amazon and several other stores seem to have more and better and cheaper products.

A electronic chain(BCC) went bust recently. MediaMarkt, another large electronic product chain store has been mentioned as potentially going bust.

I also wonder why so many supermarkets do not have a good web store. When I was working at one before the Internet age. We would have so many deliver to home shopping carts to handle. With just my bicycle I would use a cheaper supermarket internet store and delivery frequently for stocking up.

If Amazon gets better at food stuffs I would make a lot of use of it,

It also does not help when store clerks are rude and unfriendly.

btw- They have droids walking inside Amazon warehouses now!

My Mom 100% relies on food delivery from Amazon and the local grocery store and she can't get out of the house easily and my brother who only lived 10 minutes away is a fucking douchebag and will not help her.

Here, where I live, both pharmacies are in danger of going out of business. One is going bankrupt and the other in order to get a merger through is going to have to close like 400 stores nationwide.

Is your brother physically healthy enough? I visit my mum daily to give care and support. But my back is causing problems. Walking over there can cause quite some pain.Things like getting low to the ground or standing for dishwashing is difficult too.

Yes, he is fine, he and his wife (who does not work) have two cars. Brother is a lawyer with his own practice, just a good old fashioned asshole.

Being a less caring family man with a business, can not be good for that business either.

BCC the chain that went bust over here had not been paying pensions funds for the last year for 1000 people. But they are insured by the system up to 1 year back. So they get that from the insurance now iirc.

I ran into that with my Social Security. One place I worked took the money out of the paycheck, but never gave it to the government. I was lucky that I kept my pay stubs and could prove what I paid and Social Security credited me and went after my former employer.

Being fair, I think my brother is a good lawyer and a good dad (3 kids), just a lousy son and brother. He is 44.
