Spam!

Hundreds of people have mailed me! No wait, it's all spam!

Recently I've received lots of spam, and every day I get more spam than yesterday. At first I wasn't getting a lot of them, just a few, but now there are hundreds of them in my mailbox. I always try to avoid writing my email address, and when I do I write something like "email [AT] something [D0T] com". Why do I get all this spam?

I'm trying to find ways to stop it but if anyone has any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.

wow!

The Phoenix finally rises and speaks...talks

Spam, unfortunately, is more a part of internet life.
One time I didn't read any of my email in my lycos email account for a few days. I had about 20 of them! But I either deleted them or into the junk heap they went.

since I have a free email account with Lycos the spam blocker/filter is not really good. What I hate more than spam is spyware, adware and those dangerous dial-aware programs.

sincerely,
and cheers,

Hi,

If you can set up your spam filter with a list of about 50 wildcards, you can get rid of nearly all of the spam.

I managed to start getting about 20 a day, most obscene judging by the titles, but I rarely recieve anymore thanks to a long list of words in my Yahoo! mail spam filter.

It's often easier to block domains, but the ones I was recieveing were sent by the same people, however from different e-mail Yahoo accounts each time.

It's a good idea to have e-mail images hidden by default, so spammers can't tell when you read their messages, and also nasty pictures aren't displayed.

View all headers when reading e-mail, as things with a rely-to set to Paypal or similar, usually come from a spammer's address instead.

Spam is growing, however, and the new trend is text-saved-as-an-image spam, which can't be blocked because spam filter's can't read the text in images.

If the worst comes to the worst, set up a new e-mail address and configure the spammed one to bounce all messages back with a notice.

I was away for three days, and got 1400 spam messages! But thanks for the advice Hobo, I'll read your comment one more time and follow it.

I use Gmail, too.
To be honest, sticking [at] [dot] and stuff into your email addy is going to stop No-one!
Spambots are going to be clever enough to figure things out, so you might as well just go ahead and stick your actual Email address down. It's just going to annoy everyone who tries to email you, otherwise.

The Gmail spam filter is top notch, although I have been getting one or two spams through lately. But if you report them, the filters eventually get round to picking them up properly.

my yahoo account puts it all into a folder, but 2 or 3 have gotten into my main inbox. up until a few weeks ago i wasnt really getting any spam, but then i started getting these ones from people that were weird, the topics were like "So yesterday me and sally were talking and.." really weird. anyway, spam is annoying, but it will always be there, you just need an e-mail account that puts it into a nice spam folder!
