Socoder -> Off Topic -> Delete.. Delete...

As Diablo attempted to delete one of his old Links, he came across a problem.
He couldn't.

A long long time ago, I made showcases and links and stuff so that they could only be deleted by Admin.
I did this for a few reasons.

1) It's a Link Archive.. It's meant to archive, not randomly have things vanish.
2) Showcases/articles/code snippets/etc shouldn't really have any reason to disappear.
3) If there's been a half-dozen comments under the "thing", they'll get wiped along with the original "thing", without first asking the commenters, whether they want their thoughts vanishing or otherwise.

But Diablo still feels they should be deletable.

What are your thoughts?

well i think it should be possible to delete your own blog and showcase entries.

the articles/code snippets/links etc. are grand in my opinion, as you said they "shouldn't really have any reason to disappear."

Why not allow the content to be deletable on request. But at the very least I should be able to change any of my links, showcases or articles so that it says 'removed' with the guarantee it won't be restored later.

Both of those are perfectly acceptable for me, and the latter although not pretty does allow comments to remain.

I think that deletes should only be done by an admin, but that, as Diablo suggested, deletes could be requested, and reviewed by an admin.

Of course, it also depends which item it is... the trouble with deleting things on forums is that it can muck up continuity... which link was it?

"deletes" should be reviewed and deletable
by the person in question and by the adminstartor
on the need to know basis and done privately.

Sometimes links which previously worked can stop working though.

I'm siding with Diablo on this. I think content I post should be deletable.

It helps ease the worry when you post something.

Quit posting and try Google.

Well, don't post anything stupid then. I think a "report dead link" feature is the only necessary feature that is missing from this.

but what is wise to someone
can be utter foolishness to the jester.
but then again, whats stupid harkened by the jester
can be ignored for the true wisdom it is.

I'm with the "delete by request and report dead links" people.

Cheers
