My monitor is acting weird. It's a Hanns G HW173A (17" LCD), about three years old. It keeps flashing up "auto white balance" with the word "FAIL" only visible for a few milliseconds. It keeps loosing my screen resolution and resetting to 1024x768, then no longer listing 1440x900 as possible. It has other resolutions which my monitor will do badly, and when you press the monitor menu button it shows a different resolution to the one you chose. It occasionally temporarily fixes when you run a fullscreen game. Also occasionally it will look like there's wind blowing across the screen, like reading the freeview on-screen text when there's a poor signal. I have no other monitor to test with... any guesses if my screen is dying, or it's my graphics card (which is about a month old)? -=-=- blog | work | code | more code |

If you've got a new graphics card but no other monitor to test on, try replacing the old card and see if that makes a difference. If it's the monitor it still won't work with the old card. If it's the new card you can take it back to where you got it from. Either way you'll have a definitive answer. Of course this will all depend on if you still have the old card and that it still actually works!

Or even possibly onboard VGA for a while.. I know, it's crap, but worth it for a quick test, if it'll let you!

You can also take a look at the power for the monitor. If it's running of a multi-adapter, try plugging it straight into the mains. I have had several monitors and PCs die or just mess up because they can't get enough power.

I think you're getting pwned hardcore. That's what I was thinking. A different monitor wouldn't do any good in that case, obviously...

It was the monitor on-screen display that "FAIL"'d me. Indeed, if it was anywhere else I'd be worried. I think it may all have been as simple as a loose VGA cable, actually. Nothing seemed loose but since completely undoing and re-tightening its behaving a lot better (given me the screen resolution back!) If it had just been the "wind" effect on the screen, I would have immediately thought of a loose analogue cable. The other problems threw me off.
