C is not outdated - in fact, it's still being developed with C1X the next "version" or standard still being worked on.

In the end, there's a lot of personal preference and it's almost a religious argument.

The only answer is really to pick one and try it!

There's lots to choose from.

I'd suggest looking at Pascal, Python/Ruby, C/C++, C# and perhaps Java, and see what strikes your fancy.

Lately though, I've found it doesn't really matter what language your problem is solved in. If the solution isn't completely fucking lame, or the problem isn't bat-fuck-insane, you should be able to port the solution to your target language quite easily.

That's assuming people bother to post a response. Most of the time, it's a case of "I can't figure out what the manual's trying to tell me.. What does this mean?" "Have you tried reading the manual?"
Which A) Doesn't help the original poster, B) Doesn't give an actual response, and C) Doesn't help anyone else who googles the same thing later.
Damnit, it pisses me off when people do that..

I've been wait for someone to post a valid point such as yours. I also hate it when someone on a forum replies with "Have you tried reading the manual?" or "Do you bother to scan the forums or Google". That, in my opinion anyway, usually means they either:
A) Try to make themselves look big, by trying to make you look a prat.
B) Don't know the answer themselves but want to bump-up their post count.
C) They are a Troll.
D) All of the above.

That is why I don't usually ask for help on many forums, unless I really need it, although it shouldn't be like that.

Not really. That's one of the strong suits of knowing many languages. I know enough Java, C and C++ that I can port to and from C# quite easily. C# being my main language, although lately I've used alot of C++.
I struggle with things like PHP though, because the syntax rules seem to be so lax that people tend to code like shit.
Or it could just be that the syntax is shit. I don't know.
I also never really 'got' functional programming languages like LISP.
