I need to password protect a single folder : Suggestions? This shouldn't be hard, but inexplicably is.. The "Pictures" folder is on a network folder. (A Buffalo Linkstation) I'd like to lock it, so onl I can access it. Say, "If windows has folder open, allow, otherwise ask for password" Thing is, I'm too lazy to log out, I can't be arsed locking my whole damn computer just for the sake of keeping photos private. So, yeah, as stated.. "Ask for a password when I open that one single folder". And, only on this one system, not on every system that has access to the network drive. So, this system says "If click that, ask password", and has a special rule just for that. That's what I want. .. Anyone?!?!? And, I'm not aiming for encryption, or locking other system's access. Is hitting Windows Key + L to lock too slow? It's almost instantaneous to lock and unlock here. Otherwise anything you do would probably apply the same restriction to other systems (something it appears that you don't want to happen) -=-=- blog | work | code | more code |

Can you not just password-protect a .zip file? XP has it built-in, but they got rid of it in Vista/7. You'd need to use something like 7-zip to do it.

There's also www.truecrypt.org/downloads That might be better since it allows the encryption of partitions and such. -=-=- DNA |

I didn't consider the zip method, since it's on a networked drive. Same deal, more or less, for the Glary Encrypter crappyness. I don't need to scramble/confound/confuse the thing, because the rest of the network is his house (shop downstairs, home upstairs) so he'd end up having passwords whilst using his own stuff. That's kinda taking the piss. Just a little "Enter password" when you click a certain folder! Dear god, this should NOT be hard!!! *sigh* The best (SERIOUSLY!!) option is to hide the folder. Not the regular (Properties/hidden) method, because that won't work from a Buffalo Linkstation, apparently. Instead, he's had to shove his "I use this all the time, but would rather my home photos not be public" Pictures folder into a rather obscure folder on the drive. That is NOT a good solution, and I'm quite pissed off at the realisation that something this easy is not doable. -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

7-Zip Does that as well as the Glary Utilities. Winrar does that. I thought you used that all the time? -=-=- DNA |

If you've ever had a Buffalo Linkstation, you'd understand why that's a really terrible option. File access speeds are absolutely abhorrent with the things. They're fantastic for backups, and your media's ok on there, too, but if you want a multigig zip/rar on there, you're going to spend about 20 mins transferring it, before you get your one item out of it. It's bloody awful. Even a simple BlitzMax "Compile this file on the Buffalo" takes about 20 seconds to do. Crap. Fantastic backup drive. Awesome built in uTorrent. Mediaserver that "works" but.. shit slow for actual access. -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''
