The thing is, I more or less know what needs to happen. The reason the body isn't rendering correctly is because the vertices are transformed based on where the bones are. Which makes sense, because they need to be in order for animation to work.
Therefore I need to position the bones correctly in 3D space.

Keep persisting. You're at the hard part and the end is fuzzy but you'll get there. Most people in your position would give up but you can't be one of them. Be passionate about it and refuse defeat. You'll realize just how far you can push yourself and accomplish things.
