Hmm.. Well, guess I won't be using that "Pages" app on my iPad after all.
I started off with the mindset of using it, this morning, but once I'd written tutorial one it became obvious that it wasn't quite going to fit snuggly into little pictures, like that.
grrr!!

So, off to BlogSpot I went, and within a few minutes (actually, it's been a couple of hours since I started this!!) up went the first Tutorial.
Computing With Greenie : Part One - Start With Art

One of my MAJOR gripes, right now, is that every child and their dog is "forking" SpikeDislike, and then doing absolutely fuck all to it.
I mean NOTHING.
"Hey, I can has maiked spikedislike 2!!! yeay!!"
Lazy shits..

They could, at the very very very least, spend 2 minutes doodling new sprites. But, oh not, not these guys.
The one person who's spent the most effort so far, has downloaded the new SpikeDislike 2 icon (Icon, not logo!!) and shoved that in place of the logo.
*sigh*
It really is depressingly shit seeing the mountains of lackluster creations coming out of there.

.. I guess it's fun to piss about with things, but COME ON, GUYS.. TRY!!!

..
So, Greenie's doing it from scratch.
An all new SpikeDislike, titled "Ball of Hair - Be Aware!"
Today's tutorial is a simple starting point.
Create project, Create art, Save, Put art onto screen.

Nothing major, and no movement or input or anything interactive yet, but a simple little starting point.

Tomorrow (maybe, or perhaps next sunday.. who knows, nothing's planned!!) I'll start work on the background scrolling, where Greenie needs to teach all about deltas and shit like that.
Oooh, fancy!!

.. also, I should point out..
At first, I wanted this to be a pisstake, but having started writing the tutorial, I found myself doing it much more seriously than I'd intended.
Fucksocks..

Pissing about with themes and things.

Both RCHomes Tumblr and Computing With Greenie have had similar (yet wildly different!) makeovers.
Luvly stuff!!

Greenie's back, with Part Two of his epic Ball of Hair tutorial.
I wonder how many parts this thing'll take?
*shrugs*
Today's tutorial is all about getting that lovely parallax scrolling to work.
And work it does!

Jay, do you always "start with art" I find that's my weakest skill so tend to shove placeholders or someone else's art in first.

Depends on the game. Sometimes I'll know beforehand that a game needs a specific set of sprites, so will spend a bit of time building them up, but generally it's a case of "I now need X sprite!" *doodle sprite* "sorted!!"
... But then that's more a case of my erratic coding style!

|moan| Wait, SpikeDislike bounces on a sine wave? B-b-b-but things that bounce go in a parabolic shape! |moan|

|edit| And now I remember why the 'moan' tag has mushrooms on the ends... |edit|

A mushroom a day keeps the doctor away...

Yeah, I was certainly surprised when I looked at SpikeDislike's PMC code and saw that it ran on a sine wave. It makes sense, I guess, for aesthetics, but it's still kind of awkward.

A case of "the original was created in about an hour, with no planning whatsoever, and everything else has followed on from that!"

Who's Greenie?!?!

College Days

Way way back in the mists of time (1997) I was doing A-Level Computing..
We had two teachers. One was Practical, who taught actual useful interesting stuff, and the other was Theory..
Mr Green was our Computing Theory teacher.
His job was to teach a class of mostly newbs, all about the ins and out of computers. How they worked, why they worked, and all the crappy history shit that nobody would ever actually need to know.

I still have all my A-Level stuff, and I swear blind i have about a month's worth of "Punched Card" references!!
The guy seemed obsessed with the damn things!

After that came a three month stint of Binary, because nobody in the class could quite grasp the complexities of binary, before we took summer break, came back for year two, and Mr Green had vanished without a trace, leaving our Practical Computing teacher (Mr Ramsdale) having to deal with both Practical and Theory.

This lead to a memorable event where i spent about ten minutes trying to explain to Mr Ramsdale that, "Really, Mr Green HAD spent the past three months doing Binary!!" and showing him my half assed notes, along side my Margin-Doodles..

My Margin-Doodles were generally of a Stickman, Greenie, pointing at a Wipeboard, describing binary, or punched cards, or other uselessly useless things.

.... Or occasionally getting frustrated over how to work the photocopier.

-=-=-

The odd little Stickman "Greenie" stuck with me, and is noticeable in many things.
You might not recognise him by name, but you'll probably recognise his stylings..

His light blue suit, white shirt and red tie are most recognisable as Platdude's arch rivals, the GreenBats, who although it's never actually been revealed in a Platdude game, are lead by the Evil Lord Greenstick!!

2004 FTW!!

Greenie does appear in a number of my games. A quick search shows 8 games in The Jayenkai Archive. Woot!!

And then, there's Codas.. Aaah, Codas... From the days long before AGameAWeek, when I had oodles of time, and no real outlet for my general insanity...

Speaking of which... My current "no job, can't go out, sat at home all day, kinda getting a bit bored" lifestyle has seen me revisit this curious world of Greenie... So not only is he busy creating this wonderful tutorial series, he's also been spotted over on the RCHomes tumblr site. Hmmm.. I really do have too much time on my hands!!

Jayenkai Or occasionally getting frustrated over how to work the photocopier.

I saw someone scan a cat in one of those things once, looked well funny, although the cat wasn't too impressed.

Just Googled and found this one but nowhere near as funny as the one I saw.

Finally got around to this week's tutorial.

Adding Spikes, as well as turning the main loop into a gameplay/Titlescreen alternating loop, and handling collisions, too.
Quite complex, and may be a bit of a muddle, to be honest, but fuck it, at least it's a tutorial...
