Socoder -> Off Topic -> Farewell, BlitzCoder Archive :(

Hmmm... That’s annoying.. Seems that someone’s changed Blitzcoder.com’s robots.txt file, and has inadvertantly caused Archive.Org to completely destroy it’s entire archive..

I believe he still has a full backup of the site. He once said how he keeps getting questions about putting it back online, and offers of help, but when he starts to get into the technical details about how much is involved, they normally back out.

It's supposed to be gigantic ... but that was years ago. I think it was only around 10 to 20 gigabytes, which these days isn't a big deal for a VPS.

What the ruddy hell did I write that for!?!

Anyway, aye... The last I heard Specis had the backups for BC, he actually reappeared on the scene not too long ago, but think he's gone again.

There's a lot of water went under the bridge since she closed, and, even though I have very fond memories of the place, I do think it's better off being shelved, too much work to get it going, people do what people do and register their nicknames, have a gander for 5 mins and bugger off.

When Qube opened syntaxbomb, I think about 400000000 people said it was a good idea, and an unofficial "Blitz" community was just ticket, yet, it ended up with a handful of members, which resulted in loads of grief for Qube... Me and Gfk opened one, again, loads registered, but, it died and I couldnt really justify keeping it open.

Still, I did have some laughs along the way, which made it worthwhile while it was going!

So yeah, BC in my opinion should be left back in the past, no remake required because I think it would just spoil it as I fondly remember it!

Well, one of the major obstacles if I recall when it was dragged up a million times before is that the backup(s) contains private member information, and, some members have expressed their concern about this information being passed from pillar to post... So, essentially, its not a copy and paste scenario (As well as I imagine the technologies behind the site have progressed ten fold in their versions that to get it to work it would be a right royal pig anyway), it's about protecting peoples information too!
