AP quoted Mr Marini as saying that same-sex relationships were "more of an issue for this game because the characters are supposed to be a representation of your real life".

Representation of your real life!, so if that person is gay, then how the Peeking-Duck can it represent his or her real life?

who care and they seem forgeting....it just bloody character after all.

I mean you see video game of colorful character win the day rather dull character that isnt appealing.

For example

Sonic the headhog is colorful character and sell buck loads!

Whatever character you making.....make somethings stand out of crowds, make good game with it and you will be surprise how much good feedback from video games fans who play your game!

It just seems like there are still people living in the 1920's.

The GLBT crowd deserve to be accepted in the same way as straight people, I have a few friends and some cousins that are gay, lesbian, I even have a cousin that's transgender (F 2 M) and I accept them 100 percent. I personally think that this Tomodachi game should be a lot less restricted if they are going to market it as a "representation of your real life".

It's quite sad really.

Nintendo could have flown the banner here for people's life-style choices and got some pretty good PR thrown in for free (especially now when they need it most after 3 consecutive major losses).

If you can choose to have a male-female relationship in the game, then why not male/male or female/female?

Just because it's in a game doesn't mean Nintendo have to agree with it - hell, I play Mario Bros. from time to time but I don't advocate or condone jumping up and down on turtles!

Eurghhh. The whole story and everything around it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I doubt the designers intentionally removed it from a homophobic stance though and instead, more from a deadline / budget stance. The localisation should have been considered earlier in the project timeline though, that's for sure.

tldr; Whilst I agree with it being negative to not have included gay marriage in a life-sim I can't help but feel that the story has been massively overblown by the gaming press.

Lets not forget, Nintendo did introduce Birdo, gamings first transgender character in SMB2 eh?

That awkward moment when Nintendo defends their decision to "not make any form of social commentary" by making heteronormative social commentary.

I honestly think that right now isn't the best time to make a decision about including it.
They haven't "decided NOT to include it", they've simply "Not made a new decision about it".
The game simply exists the same way that every previous version of the game exists, and nothing has changed.
If they'd've purposely changed it, then that WOULD be making a decision, and that decision would've polarised opinions just as much (if not more) than not making the decision.

...
Damned if you do... Damned if you don't.

They've left it as-is. It's the easiest choice to make.

Through my experience of living in Brighton & Hove, I know that the gay scene brings loads of business for this city. Maybe letting that happen in their games would turn around the Wii-u lost profit thing.

Or maybe stop relying on the success of the SNES and market the WiiU as a more powerful HD Wii, rather than a crazy screen thingy...

[ontopic] Never really thought about this as an issue...

I honestly think that right now isn't the best time to make a decision about including it.

When will be the right time then?

I think with the current climate of general acceptance and legal gay weddings in numerous countries I actually think the time IS right now and I think a game like this, which doesn't push the gay theme or is a game purely designed to shock, could be an excellent path to make acceptance (of being gay) or having gay avatars easier.

I think maybe a year or so from now. It's too hot-topic at the minute, and that's not something that Nintendo usually tackle.

It's time that Nintendo start doing what Nintendo currently don't. They need to evolve and creating more mature content is one way to go (even if this particular game is more like Animal Crossing than The Sims).

I'm a huge Nintendo fan and I know they have massive reserves of cash, but times are changing (and have been for some time), but Nintendo aren't. Sheer goodwill and a history of good games and toy lines won't keep them forever.

They can be a serious competitor again with their game and tech knowledge.

If they start pushing more mature games (or games that the unknowing see as more mature), then Nintendo could bounce back.

In the meantime Nintendo should actually start releasing SOME damned games for WiiU. Mario Kart is soon, but then what? Smash Bros and Zelda (eventually). Hopefully Nintendo at E3 will rock our socks. I doubt it, but it's possible.
