Socoder -> Off Topic -> Retro vs HD

And this friends, is why Joe is remaining low resolution pixel-art for the second game, rather than full 1080 HD.

Agreed! In many ways it's a case of "the first thing you saw", and no matter how well designed the HD art could be, the original always feels "better". I had exactly the same dilemma with SpikeDislike2... Do I make it look better, with fancy rendered spikes and a lovely big bouncy ball.. Or do I stick with "spike"... In the end I opted for the classic look.

...having said that, the more I look at this, the nicer it gets.

I read your posts over on the official OUYA boards Spinal. Hilarious stuff. The guy that did "Real Men Wear Pink" is a total twunt. "3D artwork is sooooo easy and your (and everybody else's) retro stuff is sooooo crap"

Like he's some amazing fucking ace 3D artist.

His "easy" 3D would look poor in a first gen PS1 game and actually looks far worse than many games on the Sinclair Spectrum.

Look at some images HERE

And read the description -

Beautiful, eye-popping, pre-rendered, 2.5d HD graphics

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose, but fuck me, those images are shit.
He's either -

- Blind
- Deluded
- A compulsive liar
- All three (this is my personal guess).

I mean yeah, our artwork isn't likely to win awards, but we don't generally go around knocking other peeps off their perches (unless they deserve it for being a twunt).

Kuron I hate when people knock retro games, as they show their ignorance.

If a solar flare suddenly knocked out all current technology we would have to start again with less powerful computers, all the new-age know-it-all gamers would soon see the other side then because they are all like sheep and follow each other. Baaa-aaa-aaa!

Im in both camps, just depends on the game really... I probably be a bit turned off with a retro looking first person shooter or driving sim, but for platformers or puzzles etc, retro suits my taste buds!

Yeah, there's absolutely no reason why people can't accept and enjoy 2D, retro/retro-inspired or 3D games.

Stating one form is better than the other just highlights a complete lack of understanding of both art and gaming.

That's classic retro-gamyness, when it comes to driving games I like the top-down kind.

|edit| Platformers and maze games are my retro-poison |edit|

Oh, dont get me wrong, micro machines with the retro look was brill... and I couldnt get away with it when they 3D'd it... Looked well though, but, just lost its cartoonyness!

Like I said, I think it depends on the game!

There should be an international retro day, it should be treated like a religion. LOL

We don't need a day. SoCoder is happy to be continually retro. .. As long as you're wearing your hat.

Checked out that link rockford. Yeah, I gotta agree with you on that one, the colours, etc just don't gel nicely, which is a shame, the guy probably put a fair bit of effort into it, is probably fairly young and a tad on the ignorant side. Hopefully that'll wash out (like that colour palette is) in a few years

My opinions are that you can do both retro and HD, one game that does this really well would be ye olde Gravitron 2. It's vector style graphics firmly place it with any retro title, yet it indulges in the higher resolutions with it's polish.

Myself? I like keeping 3D nice and low-poly, proper 80's retro is also always welcome over here. To be hnoest, If a game is generally well styled and consistant with it, it's a massive bonus

I'm still learning the whole game-making stuff and will do for as long as I can, it's so much fun! Even churning out a simple game like the one I made below last year was lots of fun to do from start to finish.

I still, as you've guessed by now, need to work a LOT on promo videos

OTOH, Spinal, that HD Joe looks better than most of the characters in Super Paper Mario!
