The AI Overlords are among us. Labour aim to make the UK into some sort of AI Super-Hub.

Thread Rules

This is not an "People A would've, People B are stupid, People C are more intelligent" thread
This is a "is this a good idea in general, and how bad/good will it impact the country/global AI infrastructure" thread

The problem with A.I is that it isn't. Current "A.I" is just predictive text 2.0. It has been trained on 'the internet' which is full of completel useless nonsense. If you use the statistice of the internet to make any sort of real world decisions, you will only ever get watered down less accurate information that you would get if you catually emploeys a human expert. Not only that an "A.I" can't learn or have ideas.

I think it depends entirely on how it's used. Sensibly, I would hope.
I compared it earlier to how in the early 80s we had the BBC doing all the work they did with computers, and making BASIC a language that everyone was familiar with.
That might be a nice future to be in.
..

They'll bugger it up.

With all the NAI improvements over the last couple of years in generative AI it's just a BS machine 😂

A terrible idea IMHO. Particularly if it gets used more in the healthcare sector.

Depends.

I have been impressed by github copilot, yesterday I added a property to my state and went down to a section of my code and immediately a suggestion of four lines of code came up that was exactly what I was about to type. This is not uncommon and I get tasks like this done more quickly.

A positive effect on my life.

On the other hand, there are a lot of unpleasant uses for AI, especially in today's world of misinformation. What we will lose does concern me.

I was going to ask what you think about the comparison to the computer revolution of the 80's, certainly in the UK. Do you think we'll have kids growing up with expertise to take advantage of AI in a positive way, or is this a bad bet on another fad ?

Autocorrect's still shit at times, and Siri can still be a complete moron.
The other day I asked Siri to remind me at 3:15 to put the chicken in the oven.
Good job I was watching the clock myself, because Siri had set the reminder for the 15th of March.

I think we (as the people wot live on teh urf) have to learn to use it properly, and if widespread usage is adopted, we'll start to learn the pitfalls quicker, sooner rather than later.

My concern is when people rely on the tech too much, and do indeed leave chickens in their fridges until March. That's what worries me the most. .. People are too lazy to double check things.

And the scammers. The scammers are having a field day.

Ahhh yes, the tyranny of the default.

One of my main concerns is who is then responsible when something bad happens? Does this also allow for an easy scapegoat when convenient?

It's only a matter of time before we get "A.I. Injury Claim" ads on telly.
"Have you been harmed because Siri told you to keep the chicken in the fridge for 2 months?"
