Well, got a super cool C64 pi case... sending it back, doesn't match the description

Not only did they change the design six months ago, but they haven't updated their ebay listing, not their website to reflect that. That brown side bit is missing and the top is supposed to 'snap' closed according to the description, but nope, it just sits there, nothing securing the raspberry pi, nor keeping the lid on.

Shame, it looked so nice

IMHO it looks fecking horrid - even the top one.

Although the one you received is markedly uglier - I'll give you that much. Looks like someone's first dabble with a 3D printer.

I've 3D printed a few from thingiverse and all are a bit naff to be honest. Best Pi case so far has been this: www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-starwars-deathstar-raspberry-pi-3-case-50612

Came out really well and I modded it so that there's an RGB LED in centre of the beam. That's wired to the Pi so it can reflect disk, cpu and network activity

I can just imagine if I had a 3d printer. There'd be plastic spaghetti all over the place.

Just noticed the space bar in the top pic looks like some sort of expansion slot?

The keyboard is really my biggest gripe with this thing - it wouldn't look half as bad if the keys were better. The bottom one is just awful tho - it looks like some sort of half-melted toffee.

Epically printed Star of Death!!!!

I really would consider getting a 3D printer, if A) I had the patience to keep cleaning the spaghetti fuckups every other print, and B ) I had the ability to model anything that didn't resemble a series of cubes.
Given my artistic talent, I might as well buy a bucket of these and some glue.

... And I have been tempted to!

Thought about it too. Three things put me off.

1. The initial cost.
2. The slow speed.
3. Running costs vs value of output.

The running costs are pretty low actually. We don't barely notice anything on the smart meter. The cost of a 1kg real of PLA varies on quality, but you're looking around 18 quid for 1kg - which lasts AGES. That death star probably cost me a couple of quid to make at most.

Slow? Well, it's not the fastest thing in the world for sure. The time required varies more on the complexity of a design than the actual size of it. That death star probably took around 9 hours for each of the main segments (two of) and the tops and bottoms another 6-7 hours each.

The first few layers are the most important and if you can get these right then you shouldn't get any spaghetti mess. There's a number of tweaks you can do to improve things and these just take time to learn and do.

I grabbed this on the cheap: www.amazon.co.uk/Wanhao-i3-V2-Duplicator-3D-Printer/dp/B01LWL4CTY but the newer version is now cheaper than that: www.amazon.co.uk/Wanhao-i3Plus-Duplicator-3D-Printer/dp/B01LX8KNV3/

Would I recommend buying one? For sure. We print all sorts of things now (go take a look on myminifactory or thingiverse). But I've also started making my own stuff - and it's far easier than you'd think.

.. Currently looking through different acrylic paints on Amazon, and wondering how good the cheapest of cheap sets might look on plain grey plastic..

We've used el-cheapo acrylics from Lidl and they've worked really well so far. Here's a few more things we've made

Hold the phone.... How do I get the blame? tomatoe pointed out the 'values' and low cost...

However, if you're 3d modeling skills improve, I wouldn't mind a half scale C64 as a raspberry pi case... (joke).

I've spent the past hour or so looking for a printable CPC6128...

Indeed, I may have to learn how to do that there Modelling..

Oh dear Jay. You've done it now! It is a lot of fun though

You'll need some software before you get started (a slicer). Most popular free slicer is Cura : ultimaker.com/en/products/ultimaker-cura-software

I eventually bought Simplify3D but I wouldn't recommend taking that step just yet as it's not cheap.

Which printer did you go for in the end?
Sat, 17 Feb 2018, 14:32
Jayenkai
OK, I'll grab that, too.
Today I installed Blender to attempt to model things, and MeshLab to help reduce the polygons on said thing that took a few few hours to model.
I'll run it through the slicer, and see how it turns out!

I grabbed the "Wanhao i3Plus".. Seemed to have good reviews, but whether it's compatible with my laziness/inability to do much, we'll have to wait and see.

Nice one - really good printers.

The printers normally come with a tiny amount of filament, but it's enough to do a few test prints. Almost certainly your first prints are going to be problematic - just like everybody when they start

Two things - bed adhesion and bed leveling. Get the bed leveled before you start (lots of info on the web on how to do this). Adhesion will then become your next area of concern (and fiddling). If you're lucky you'll get some prints out without issue, but at some point you'll need to dig into this area more.

I use a square of borosilicate glass www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00QM4LUN4 now which sits on top of the build plate (held down with bulldog clips). Then I warm the bed up and rub on some pritstick where the print will go. That keeps things nicely in place.

Then it's a case of learning how to do 3d things - taking care of overhangs and voids etc.

You'll also find that you can drive the printer from the slicer software, but I have more issues with that than I care to mention. Instead, I dump the gcode files onto an sd card and use that in the printer instead.

All good fun

I expect to be going crazy, by mid-week!
Should be here Monday, but it's Amazon, so it probably won't turn up until about 7pm or something.
Bah, humbug!
