No Man's Sky - Switch

My journey restarts once more, as the Switch edition released this morning.
I spent about an hour and a half restarting from scratch, with a brand new "Plat Viper SW1" vessel, and a rapidly diminishing supply chain.
The switch copes admirably, and though there's a little more pop-in than in the PS4 Pro version, it is at least managing to stay silky smooth.

Due to my motion sickness and odd inability to play 3D games on the telly, I've previously only played on PS4 via Remote Play on the iPad, or alternatively the Xbox Gamepass Cloud version, also via the iPad.
Having the ability to walk in a straight line without the streaming doing an occasional stutter, or turn around without compensating for lag, is QUITE an improvement for me!!

I've yet to attempt two things, however.
1. The interior of the Space Station is chock-full of extreme lighting, and ALWAYS caused the PS4's fan to go into overdrive. I'm really interested to see how well/badly the Switch copes with that. I would imagine they've toned the lights down in there!!
2. I've no idea how long it takes to use the warp, yet. I imagine it'll be a fair wait, as the game seemed to take ages for that first boot.
I'll have to play some more and get back to you on that.

Switch screenshot, sent via Twitter and grabbed from there, so jpeg artefacts are much more apparent than ingame!

Otherwise, smooth, ran well enough, no grumbles from me.

Play time : About an hour and a half, on a Day-One, well used Switch, with a battery that's seen better days.
The battery went from a full charge, down to about 40%, which is roughly what I'd get with BOTW nowadays.
If you have a fresher Switch, I'm sure it'll probably last a good number of hours.

ToboBobo on Twitter asked how the GUI is, and if it's readable on the small screen. Though I'll admit having to hold it a bit closer to my face than I do with the iPad, it wasn't really all that much worse, and I think that's more down to my shitty eyesight than anything!
It's smaller, but it's perfectly legible, even down to the tiny button icons.

Some of the nav icons are getting lost in the scenery to my eyes, sometimes. I think I'll get used to it.

I agree with your assessment. I like playing on a handheld as I can be 50% less antisocial ... ie: sit with Mrs H while she watches masterchuff or something, with the switch and one earphone in so I can join in the conversation with grunts and nods.

One point on the planet the fan got quite busy.

Played less than an hour so far. With continue tonight.

The pop up of things around you is certainly more noticeable. Sometimes things appear underfoot at its worst and flying towards buildings or big structures you see them above the ground level and gradually get pulled down as you get closer.

It isn't spoiling anything for me though, even at its worst. I am liking the pick up and play aspect of this even more. Will be taking my switch out with me today ... hope the battery lasts long enough! Not tested out and about for over a year I think.

Playing through the "story" again is leaving me wishing that the story had a little more randomness to it.
It's very repetitive the second time around!
Also, objects around your base take ages to load in!!

The rumored new switch is said to be 4x as powerful.

I was looking at the Steam Deck. These can now be ordered without a waiting list. But I would not know which games I would play on it. Tools do not seem to work on it. Not sure if no mans sky is on steam.

It's "on Steam", and even includes VR support, but I'd need a half-assed PC to run it like that, and I'm in no position to be buying a fully fledged (not to mention power hungry!) PC in order to do that.
Still waiting on that Mac edition!
Incidentally, if the Mac version does appear, I wonder if that means there'll be an iOS edition, too?
You might be able to play it on your iPad with a controller...

Ios has few games. Nothing like nms. I only play Minecraft on it.

There's gta though.

When they get no mans sky on iphone I wil grab it.

Found a lovely luscious green grassy planet.
The Switch could barely render more than a couple of patches of grass at a time, and at night the plants started to light up, causing the poor Switch to stutter and frameskip like crazy!!!

It really is. It's been silky smooth up to now.
To be fair, the PS4s fan would've been going a dinger at that point, so you can't complain, really.
... maybe!!

Perhaps this is where the extra power through the Dock might help? I've not found any taxing planets yet but will test that when I do.

Obviously nothing can be done if playing in handheld mode. Can understand why they took some time to get the switch version out, so far the performance has been acceptable and fine for gameplay, but with the randomness of planets there must be some that suffer on it.

Yeah, I haven't noticed any other real slowdown, other than that single planet.
It's been fun, so far, and I shall continue on my journey, on the quest for a blue bubble ship!!

Shhh no spoilers, in the past when I've played other versions I have never got further than a few hyperspace jumps and then i tend to get lost on what I need to do. This v4 update seems much improved so hopefully I'll get further now and I'm not feeling frustrated so far. Enjoying playing it.

Any tips on things I could do to make life easier?

I've found a glitch with buying ships via part exchange that let me keep both ships, so that has allowed me to get a nicer ship and eased one frustration.

"Any tips on things I could do to make life easier?"

High commodities..

At the top of the Buy list in each space station's "big circle of sales" doohickey, are a bunch of bright green "We sell these cheap" commodities.
At the bottom of the Sell list are the accompanying "What we'll buy for profit" commodities. Bright green = super!

Find three or four stations with differing economies and jot down their most wanted, then jaunt back and forth a bit, doing your best wheeler dealer impression.
Takes about 30 seconds for the "definitely not a Stargate" to send you through, but if you buy and sell tons you'll make a fortune fast.

Oh, and save often.. (hop in and out of your spaceship to auto-save) .. I've had the game crash on me twice, so far.

...and if you do have 2 or more ships, find yourself a frigate, and you can store the extra ships in there.

If nothing else, the update has helped that one planet, immensely.
I can now run around with a giant storm on the horizon, and bright lights all around me, and the frame rate keeps up!!

Bravo, update!!

Nice. I did wonder as I thought this was version 4.0 already, I was looking for all the difficulty settings you were supposed to be able to tweak.

I bet they've fixed the part exchange glitch .... hopefully I'll get to keep my nice ship

With the new update, head to the Anomaly (dpad down whilst in space, it's in there somewhere!!) then head to the Quicksilver guy. He'll offer you both a free Switch-Joycon coloured MultiTool, and an S-Class Switch-JoyCon coloured ship.
If you fancy free upgrades, that is..

What does head towards the Anomaly mean? I can see the galaxy map on dpad down. I've only jumped once so far... do I need to wait until I'm further into the game?

Um.. I don't think you have to be far through the basic "story", no..
Should be just here, to the left of the battery symbol.

Ah, I had to shoot some pirates and then follow a comms thing, land at a crash site, get name, fly into space and answer another comms message and now I can summon the Anomaly.

I've set up my second base on a green planet with glowy trees and grass. I bet its not 100 miles away from your version which had the slow down originally. Thankfully its running at a good speed with the latest patches as you found. Also has this nice blob creature that blobs around in a cute fashion, and cloud like things that bounce around the floor at speed.

Quick question... so is the idea to set up bases as you travel, with stargstes so you can get back to them?
