Getting used to Firefox 3

Ubuntu notified me that I had 49 updates yesterday, for various libraries and software packages. I didn't notice that Swiftfox (an optimized version of Firefox, for Linux, that is incredibly fast) had an upgrade from v2 to v3 beta in there (firefox 3 just left alpha and has now hit beta)

So there I was, surprised with the new version of Firefox, which I didn't particularly want yet. But I stuck with it, and I'm growing to get used to it.

Most my extensions were broke for not officially supporting v3, so I had to add these two values into about:config

extensions.checkCompatibility = false
extensions.checkUpdateSecurity = false

I thought seeing as this might end up crashing things, to disable the non-important ones.

There's some neat new features:

The URL bar contains a lot more information in the history, and searches titles as well as URLs:
It took me a while to get used to, and I didn't like it at first, but it makes it a lot easier to find articles that I can't remember the URL to.

Any bookmark folders don't instantly close when you open links inside them - this is great because now when a bookmarked RSS feed shows more than one result, I don't have to repeatedly open the folder. I can open multiple new posts in one go instead.

A plugin manager

There's some more fancy stuff like giving your bookmarks tags, but I don't care for that.

There's better native UI integration.

It feels faster. (At least on Linux)

Full tooltips/titles - I can now read XKCD comics without having to view the source code!

But on the downside, there's still some issues (it's Beta release 1, after all) - my File/Edit/View bar sometimes stops working, the drag + drop of bookmarks in folders is inaccurate (though an improvement - v2 in Linux didn't let you do that at all - you had to go through the manage bookmarks tool) and a lot of my RSS feeds aren't parsed properly by Firefox. Also, some very large pages are quite sluggish.

So.... anyone else jumped aboard and started using it yet?

I gave it a go a couple of weeks ago, but decided to go back since I couldn't live without my Google Toolbar
Now I know I can disable the check I might bother to try it again.

Remember if it breaks, there's always Firefox safe mode.

Hobo,

I'm surprised you don't have the Adblock plug in.
Maybe you do...but just in case if you don't.
Also, others here may like to know too.

The Adblock plug in.....

Yep, I couldn't live without AdBlock Plus - always the first thing I install.
