Socoder -> Wednesday Workshop -> #127 - The 1 Hour Challenge

Wednesday Workshop #127 : The 1 Hour Challenge
Time until Deadline

Week : 28 November 2007
The Reason : Don't pretend that you hadn't already guessed this one!

The Challenge : One hour. That's all you get for this week's challenge! Is it possible to make a game in an hour? Guess we'll find out!

(And no, next week won't be the 30 minute challenge! 3 of these is enough!)

Extra Info
Keep your eye on the time, and don't cheat
As always, you can use pre-made gfx and sounds if you need.

Weekly Rules/How to Enter
You have until Tuesday Night/Wednesday Morning 00:00 BST to submit your levels. ^ See Deadline Link! ^

Wed.Workshop is at SoCoder.co.nr. If you can read this, you're probably already there!

Stick your entry underneath this post, leaving a link to your zip or the source of your game, or whatever. (I really should get round to that Upload thing, shouldn't I!)

If you can't figure it out, or have a really rubbish server, send it to Jayenkai@Gmail.com and I'll stick it straight onto the SoCoder (Official Wed.Workshop) site.

Entries will be collected during the week, and then entered into the next week's voting. (If there are any entries..)

Please try to keep all entries within small file sizes. 2Mb is the average maximum for files.
Additional Rules are available at the SoCoder (Official Wed.Workshop) site, under the list of previous workshops.

Last Week's Games
Last week there were 3 entries!
Mole kept the mouse moving, Tikihead kept the mouse moving and Prospero kept the mouse moving.
Which one wins?!

You can download them all at the Wednesday Workshop page.
Make sure to comment and leave a vote!

I have 2 essays and some business coursework in for friday/monday, so I think I will enter.

"Mole kept the mouse moving, Tikihead kept the mouse moving and Prospero kept the mouse moving."

LOL at that!

OK, Pretty much exactly 1 hour (though I had to look up a few command references first so I knew what I was doing) and it's not quite what it should be. Had I done this last night I could have had another hour and advanced further...

Ignore the "pulse" idea because I didn't get to add it.
You have a minute to catch as many pixels as you can, the quicker you catch them the higher their score. When you catch one though, your pointer will jump randomly for an extra edge of difficulty.

I've been testing it and only had it crash once... Not sure why though,

|edit| I've now identified the error and it's a silly little one. I'll leave my code here as it was but tell you that you need to add Exit in the UpdatePixels() function just after the first Delete pixel Correct function should read... I could have had another hour and advanced further...

Now it doesn't try to read the age of a dead pixel |edit|

Awww.. Sucks..
If it wasn't for the fact that I'd made a complete balls up on the CPU player, this would've been done in an hour.
As it is, it took 1 hour and 7 mins, give or take playtesting.

1 hour, 7 mins

Theres some good games here. I would post one but I forgot all the 2D stuff well most of it and if I make a game in 3D I would go overboard and end up taking forever to make it.....

Jayenkai: Were you super happy when making this game? Super Happy Snowball warriors? WTF.. lol

Ha Jays one is crazy, and I just plain suck at Eikon's.

Time to make mine.

Dun dun dunnnn!

Shooter: Extreme

Finding the game on the site is just part of the fun you will have with this game!

It took me 1 hour and 7 minutes, I only went over because the clouds I drew at first were too big, and I just generally was slow about the clouds.

You are disguised as a simplistic reticule (that is the right word isn't it??) who must destroy the targets. The targets disappear after a small period of time. Once you have destroyed all the on-screen targets the next wave will magically appear. If you end up with no targets on the screen, it means you managed to f*ck it up and you lose. Write your score on a piece of paper and try and beat it next time!

15735 at Forklift_Fred's game Jay's game was quite repetitive, so I only threw a few snowballs and then stopped playing Eikon's game is my favorite so far, even though I last for about a minute!

Wow, dusk bounder is like a shit version of Jump & Roll. One of my favorate games on the amiga. I loved that game, can you do a proper remake Eikon? Considering you did this one in an hour its still very good

Thanks for the compliments on my game. I haven't played Jump & Roll on the amiga, Mike_G, so I can't do a proper remake, but I may end up revamping this version with online high scores and better graphics.

I had an idea for another game so I thought I'd have another go...

Catch A Cold

Went a little over the time due to play testing and fiddling with the font size and layout too much. (And bloody interruptions which is why it's taken me 20 to post it  )

Arrow keys to move your little bar at the bottom, score a point for every letter you catch, double if you catch either c,o,l or d once you have all 4 you gain an extra 1000 points for... wait for it... catching a "C O L D" !

You can hold up to 9 of each letter at a time (hence the numbers underneath) but when you have all 4 then you lose one of each.

Both my games as exe in a rar: www.mediafire.com/?4xyqoc3tmzy

Bleh, can't join right now, I'm too busy.

For the record, I found an old document about the login protocol for MU-Online, and so I would have probably made a semi-working server EMU for logging in for this challenge... probably in C#.
As it is, I think this challenge is a bit racist (for lack of a better word atm), as it pretty much limits itself to Blitz and possibly C# coders, and doesn't leave room for creating MMOs, simply because of the time constraint.

You're right about the time constraint..

-2 days to do a game is insane..
