Socoder -> Off Topic -> Regarding the Mud Chat

*sigh*

Ever since I first came here, I've been an avid supporter of the Mud Chat, and one of it's most active members.
However, as of this post I am more or less pulling out completely, and I would advice other people reading this to do the same.
I hate to admit it, but this forum (or at least the Mud Chat) is becoming more and more like Coder's Workshop every day.

What happens in the Mud Chat is usually this;

DiablosDevil, Jay and Cower will be discussing a subject. If you disagree with them or try to change the topic, they'll simply /mute you, or you'll get thrown into another chatroom.
Posting YouTube videos is basically forbidden as long as Jay's in the chat, and if you do it you'll get shouted at, and/or thrown into another chat room.
Discussing two subjects in the chat at the same time is not allowed. Again, if this happens everyone will /mute you, or you'll get superkicked.
Another 'problem' is that there are too few people.
It is possible that with more people the atmosphere would change.
Usually the participants in the chat consists of me, DiablosDevil, Spare, Jay and/or Cower. Then once in a while Phoenix and Hobo Ben will show up.
This could be one of the reasons why the environment tend to get stale, often to the point of hostility and sometimes very unfriendly.

I'm pretty much out for a while, though I'm probably going to drop in from time to time to see how things are going.

I agree, the mudchat is becomming less friendly. However I'd also say you take some of this too seriously. I might often disagree with you but you also typically disagree with me. It runs both ways and this is not a bad thing.

But you do post YouTube videos, constantly. I would predict that if you looked through the MudChat log you'll find over 95% of the videos posted are by you.

However some of this stems from today. I disagreed with you because you said:
  • That SDL couldn't be used with OpenGL
  • That SDL is essentially an OpenGL wrapper
  • That OpenGL can be used to create windows and displays.

AFAIK all of these are just all untrue, but does anyone really care? It's just a library.

You also said 'Linux == malware', which is where Cower added his disagreement. But again I don't see the issue. HoboBen has often said to me how much better Linux is then Windows, it's not something I take personally.

I don't have a problem with the disagreeing itself, so much as the 'You suck because you disagree with me! I'm gonna mute you now!' attitude.

It's not the "You disagree", it's the "OK, I heard you.. ok, I heard you... OK, I HEARD YOU... OH KAY, I HEARD YOU.. Mute.."

Especially when you're busying away trying to do some nice happy cheery artsy stuff, and the people in the mudchat are doing nothing but creating a really miserable atmosphere.

This is a downer topic.
Mudchat will probably be gone by tomorrow, it's caused a whole lot of issues on this site, from the Soltan crap, to the Mousey chaos, and now this.

Jay: By all means, keep the MudChat.
In fact, I would like it to stay!

I'm just saying I'll be out of it for a while.
Also, I think it's good people know what they are going into if they enter.

Perhaps the MudChat should come with a warning...? (Considering we all seem to agree that the atmosphere's been getting a lil' sour)

Afr0, you know there's no reason to make a thread like this -- it's really just a negative no matter how you slice it. I'm sure there are issues that individuals may need to improve on, and if you have personal issues with an individual then I suggest you make use of the PM system. Topics like this frankly don't make the forum look good, and really just kick everyone in the shins.

It's not the end of the world if someone doesn't agree with you, and if they don't, just let it go and move on to something else in the conversation. -- That is a note for everyone, not just you afr0.

In this case, I'd say that'd be all individuals in the MudChat then. Including myself.
Both Diablos and Jay agreed with me that the mood is getting a little negative in the MudChat, so clearly this is not just something I've been feeling.

I don't go in there that often any more, but I don't think it should go. People will always have disagreements, but people do get along as well, and the MudChat is too good a feature to be removed just over something like this.

Back with all that Soltan stuff, we both acted like idiots, but we got over it eventually (we now get on OK). My point is that just because people have disagreements now doesn't mean they always will - just so long as people learn to be civil, everything can get on fine.

Perhaps it's just the time of year.

Right now it's cold, dark, always raining, everyone has flu, it's generally pretty gloomy, and did I mention it's bloody cold?

Well, the reason they smite you when Jay and DD are chatting is that you are encroaching in on a subject that you have no relative or relevant answer.

Also, is Evil Roy Ferguson really Evil!?!?

Might be a poll topic.

The mudchat doesn't work on Ubuntu 9.10 in Firefox or Chrome. I guess I can't join in the bitchiness.

A chatroom without a common topic will just plain suck. Afr0 doesn't give a crap what Jay and DD are talking about, and Jay and DD don't care what Afr0 is talking about. Trying to constructively talk about something is impossible and everyone just pisses everyone else off because everyone is suddenly annoying. As much as I like chat rooms, I am going to have to agree with Jay that it's a good idea executed badly. Real time communication is great, but we forgot that you have to all want to talk about something similar or it's a cluster-fuck of everyone screaming about their own thing.

Personalities are at work here too. People are being assholes, annoying, and pushy. It's a bit like a family here, everyone is annoyed with everyone else after dealing with them for far too long.

Just take a breather people and relax. We are all the family of SoCoder, even if we can't get along.

Heh, IIRC you have a tendency to do that just as much, if not more than, me.

Edit: No offence - just saying it as I recall it.
