Socoder -> Music -> Music Software

With my new and innocent laptop, I want to listen to music. I've always used Winamp, without thinking much about the alternatives. But the thought struck me today, that there might be better programs around.

What do you use, and more importantly, why do you use it?

I use the LastFM downloadable client. Reason is that I can stream my favourite music for free, legally.

I use Coolplayer because it's nice and neat, but I mostly only have mp3's on my drive.
It also works great for Oggs, and there's flac/wma plugins avaiable.
Note : I also have all my music nicely organised in folders. Rather than have a big bulky memory hog of a program do all the cataloguing, I just browse my folders, pick and album, right click, play in Coolplayer.

Other than that, though, it's just a tiny Player-only proggy. Does that, and nothing more.

But I do use Winamp.. Mostly for it's library. Left Alt+L, Shoutcast Radio, pick a stream, leave it going..

I've recently discovered MediaMonkey which is free and impressed me very quickly. I don't play a lot of music on my PC though, to be fair, but I downloaded it for it's MP3 handling and ability to find and add relevant artwork to them. I found it could edit the ID3 tags far easier than either "Multi ID3 Tag Editor" or the software that came with my Creative Zen MP3 player.

You can even use Winamp if you require pugins from it! Oh and I have just been looking at skins for it... guess what? You can even use Winamp skins

(Er... I just tried that and it doesn't seem to work... Neither did the skin I downloaded from their site... maybe you need the 'Gold' version??)

|edit| It looks like the WinAmp skins are missing skin definitions needed for the newer version of MediaMonkey. |edit|

I use Media Monkey too. It plays FLAC and I find it just a pleasant player to use.

I've always used Winamp because it supports non-standard file music formats, of which I found on modarchive.com (which no longer exists, I think its modarchive.org). Windows Media Player can't do that, it seems.

If you go looking for plugins, you can also create mp3's from your CD collection. Though I, too, have not searched for alternatives to winamp.

I use iTunes because it syncs with my iPod.

I've heard good things about foobar2000. I've never used it - I'm just mentioning it because you wanted to hear about alternatives.

Personally I've been using Winamp on windows. I don't want much out of a music player because it's always minimised. Winamp minimises to the System Tray and that's good enough for me.

I use iTunes. It syncs with my iPhone and I find it very convenient because of the music store build in.

foobar2000 is great--if you really want full customization--
If you don't want to be dedicated to making your player what it is, then don't mess with foobar, unless you like the default layout. Don't let the screenshots on the site link hobo sent fool you, it can also look like this if you're willing to put in the time.

I've been switching between windows media player and winamp. On my laptop i just have wmp because i'm trying not to install too much. I like winamp, but i don't like its search features. But i do like its mini mode and the hotkeys.
