What Have You Done - April 2022

Ups

What did you get done this Month?
  • Games
  • Backups
  • Disks and Disks and Disks

Did everything turn out as planned?
I knew that doing the Floppy Disk drawer would take some time, but 5 hours on just a third of it is taking the smeg!
Code wise I'm doing ok. I'm aiming to do one Amiga game at the end of each month, and have already finished this month's, so .. Onto the next I guess.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • A good "Strategy" game.

    Why not?
There's a card game called "GOPS".. Game Of Pure Strategy.
It's a fairly simple concept, so I rustled up the code and got the game working fairly quickly.
Then I tried to code an AI for it, and .. struggled to find a good "Strategy" for the gameplay.
And I tried, and I tried..
And I gave up and googled it.
And then I gave up altogether.

If you can find a decent strategy for GOPS, please do let me know what the hell it is!!

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Trying to come up with some kind of game idea for my next SmileBASIC release.

    How's that going?
    It's not.
I've done a LOT of games in SmileBASIC, now, and it's getting harder and harder to come up with anything vaguely different.
I might need to boot up the Amiga and sit playing Frontier:Elite II for several weeks. That'll be good for ideas, right!?!?

    Next

What's the plan for the next Month?
  • WebGL?

I wrote that in the January "What Have You Done" thread, but still haven't made a start.
    I should do that..

Not much from me this month, work... Work... Then, just generally, more work, any free time, just retro gaming, slumped in my chair like a dropped omelette.

Dusted off the Quest 2 for a bit Resist action, when I could be chewed to do a bit of standy up gaming, though you can play this sitting, but I like to stand in VR.

Bought a planer/thicknesser to add to my DIY'y/Workshop [AKA the outhouse] kit, oh, and a plunge saw... They are class!

Game dev wise... I have Cerberus-X that opens when me MacMini starts up, so, just been closing that down!

Other then them, nothing special, had a few poo's, blinked, grew a bit of hair, picked me nose, scratched me nads!

I'm stil trying to use the iPhone 13 for my creative things. The productive hours did drop after the first two weeks of getting the phone. The battery life is really good.

I got my mum a new phone too. There was a android phone for sale. 200 euro's cheaper than before. My mum wanted a phone with a really good camera. This one had the highest score on camera and the lowest price. Stil 310 euro's. It has a 108 mp camera and 3 lenses. Night vision etc. 128 gb and 4k 30fps video.
I ordered her a leather wallet like cover. She dropped her previous phone and the glass was cracked. I was going to give her a new one in june anyway for her birthday.

There is a missing cat that i'm helping to find for someone. Yesterday I wanted to take photo's of his head. But there was a tractor working in the fields nearby where the missing cat was sighted. I think he was hiding somewhere as the tractor noise was quite loud.
I was able take pictures of the cat the day before. The person thinks it is her cat. But needs to see the head. Her daughter was already looking at the area a couple of times.
Cats can be difficult to tell apart. The area where this cat appeared last week is a forest area too. I bike through that area every day and connected the new cat there with the missing one from the neighborhood app.

I'm trying to work on a game but with starting a new job my mind has been going in different directions and I've not had the right mood to sit down in the evenings. I hope to change that though.

The game I'm working on is a 'demake' of HamsterJam which me and Stu made for windows. I'm making this for the (hopefully unexpanded) Vic 20. I say demake as HamsterJam is a remake of Rockman on the Vic 20 - a kind of multiscreen boulderdash-style game that is fondly remembered by anyone who had or played on a Vic. I'll have to past the latest screenshots here. I have got to the player moving around the screen eating away the dirt and the boulders behaviour working.

I have seen people use that 'dall-e' to come up with video game ideas. Whole levels of atari 2600 ideas. Have you tried if that nightcafe studio can come up with ideas?

    Yep!!
A couple of times, but it's a little quirky. Usually by the time I've come up with a quirky phrase to pop into the text box, I've already come up with a game idea
