I've just started learning Haskell, which so far is pretty amazing. Everything is a function, you cannot change a variable once it's defined, and the syntax is pretty different. I'm learning this as the other Computing Students have learnt it, so next year they will presume we all know it (so I need to learn it).

This got me wondering, what are other people's next language to learn? What langauge would you most like to learn? And to help pad out the space, what language do you definitely not want to learn? Finally, why?

One of the main reasons I chose to learn Ruby was because it was so different to Blitz. Is this a reason others think of? Or are you purely looking at available support and libraries? What else helps to govern your reasons for picking said language.

I've said it before, but when I do finally feel the need to move on, I think I'll only be shifting for extra 2D Capabilities.. So, that's probably Cobra.

If not Cobra then BlitzMax, but based on Demo time I seem to recall Cobra being ever so slightly more productive. (Having said that, though, I was aiming to learn it and code a Workshop entry at the same time! So perhaps that's slightly biased.)

I jumped ship from B3D a couple of years ago now, so if that still counts as my next language then it was (and is) BlitzMax which is really fun and easy once you get into it and get used to the OOP. It's the change in types and using methods that make it take a while to get used to it, but once you do it is a lot more versatile than the B3D version.

Happy days - just a shame my coding mojo seems to be dead most of the time.

Right now im working on C# for my job and also ASP.NET and a bunch .NET stuff. I keep wanting to learn DirectX and C++ though. And I'm waiting for Jay to write his article on DS Programming so that I can start that also.

I keep meaning to learn an AI language like Prolog because it is something completely different to anything I've used before.

There is not any language that I don't really want to do as such (except maybe Brainfuck and Malebolge, which I don't want to try ), but I don't want to do parts of languages, for example like Visual Basic and Visual C++ - anything visual, or that generates visual GUI code. Except HTML, where that's basically handled for you, and perhaps the odd game menu in Cobra now. The only time GUI programming was any good was when I used Delphi once, and it made more sense.

You are right HoboBen, GUI makers usually add extra code and don't make GUI's as good as if you programmed them yourself. It's also important to know how to build one. But Visual Studio is really good at making GUI's for you. Far better then most.

You should take a look at Java and Swing. Swing is amazing and very easy to use. Although you end up writing a lot of code to do anything.

For me, it'll probably PIC-BASIC for PIC microcontrollers, cos I'm hoping to get my hands on a PIC-programmer kit soon. Then probably AJAX, cos it sounds interesting, and if/when Cobra 3D comes out, I might take a peek into that.

also and especially the XGS II/XGS 6502
But knowing Andre Lamothe changes his mind and
designs a lot...who knows? and we will see. Hopefully, it won't be like the Hydra nor the first XGS. I hope it stays more of a cubic game console and home computer combo. True!!

for my games i am sticking to C++ and openGL/win32 because it will be better for older machines

Oh cheers Diablo. I'm looking at the Wikipedia entry on Java and Swing. I might take a quick look to learn a little from it. GUIs really don't thrill me to be honest, so I probably won't do much more than have a quick play around. But, it does look quite different to anything else I've looked at so far, so I might have more fun with it.
